Job summary

Forest Glen Animal Hospital is offering a Veterinary externship in Chicago to provide hands-on clinical experience under supervision. Externs will work with Associate Veterinarians to gather histories, conduct exams, and develop treatment plans while engaging in diagnostics, dentistry, and surgery observation or assistance.

The program emphasizes clinical skill development and communication with the medical team and clients; externships range from two to eight weeks, with a travel/living stipend

Qualifications

• Externship at an NVA hospital with supervision by Associate Veterinarians.
• Two to eight weeks duration for externships.
• Travel/living expense stipend available; amount shown as $1,500 for Forest Glen Animal Hospital.

Responsibilities

• Gather patient histories and perform physical exams.
• Create treatment plans and order/interpret diagnostics.
• Perform dentistry services, observe or assist surgical procedures, and manage medical cases.

Description & Requirements

An externship experience at an NVA hospital will give students the unique opportunity to understand the day-to-day operations of the practice, and to gain valuable hands‑on clinical experience. Although every NVA hospital is unique, we all have some things in common: an environment that is supportive, committed to excellent medicine, and provides exceptional service to animals and the people who love them.

Students will work closely with the supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creation of treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing/assisting or performing surgical procedures, and medical management of patients. In addition to practicing their clinical skills, student externs will have the opportunity to practice their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.

Most externship experiences at Forest Glen Animal Hospital range from two to eight weeks depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students (regardless of class year) are encouraged to participate in NVA externships.
