Job summary

SMCA Veterinary Care, PLLC in Wisconsin seeks a Veterinary Assistant to support veterinarians during exams, prepare vaccines, and manage patient care. You will document medical records, restrain animals for procedures, triage cases, and educate clients on treatments and vaccines.

This role is physically active, involves lifting up to 40 pounds, and requires professionalism to ensure exceptional client service. Experience with EzyVet and lab procedures is a plus.

Qualifications

• No formal degree required if candidate has basic veterinary assisting aptitude.
• Experience assisting veterinarians is helpful but not always required.
• Willingness to learn and adapt in a fast-paced clinic environment.

Responsibilities

• Assist doctors in exam rooms.
• Prepare vaccines.
• Provide patient care, keeping patients clean, dry, and comfortable.
• Properly restrain pets for common procedures.
• Triaging patients.
• Expressing anal glands and performing pedicures.
• Phlebotomy.
• Preparing lab work and performing in-house blood work.
• Ability to help restrain pets for radiographs.
• Use EzyVet for input of charges and proper medical recordkeeping.
• Proper documentation of medical records.
• Communicating with Clients (discussing treatment plans, vaccines schedules).
• Basic GP education.
• Prepares and maintains the exam rooms and treatment areas.
• Ensure that each animal has proper identification, including name tags, kennel cards.
• Knowledge of common medications.
• Recognizes patients with contagious disease and follow applicable procedures.
• Ability to properly fill prescriptions and over the counter medications.
• Ability to administer subcutaneous fluids and injectable medications.
• Ability to administer intramuscular injections, intravenous injections and placing intravenous catheters.
• Maintains knowledge of the hospital’s programs, products and services.
• Obtains baseline information, such as weight and temperature, as well as pertinent patient health information.
• Maintain compassion, sympathy and professionalism during high-stress situations and ensure client service is exceeding the expectations of our clients.

• Handle different forms of payments (care credit, check, cash, credit, etc.).

• Be a liaison between courier service and laboratory to ensure samples are collected in time.
• Time management and multitasking abilities.
• Ability to train new hires.
• Ability to educate clients on non‑medical questions clients may have.

*This job is physically active and requires frequent bending and standing for long periods of time. It requires routine lifting and restraining of pets. Ability to lift objects weighing 40 pounds without assistance and objects weighing more than 40 pounds with assistance. Must be able to withstand unpleasant odors and noises. May be exposed to bites, scratches, animal waste and contagious diseases.
