Job summary

Qualifications

  • High School or GED required (degree conferred by start date)
  • Veterinary Assistant: 2 years related experience or AS in Veterinary Technology with 2 years related experience or BS in Biological Sciences or DVM/equivalent
  • Veterinary Technician I: RVT or AS in Vet Tech and OK tech exam readiness and licensure within 120 days
  • Veterinary Technician II: 3 years as Veterinary Assistant/Technician in AVMA teaching hospital or large private practice
  • Veterinary Technician III: 6 years experience as Vet Assistant/Technician in AVMA teaching hospital or large practice
  • Senior Veterinary Technician: 8+ years in AVMA setting with specialty experience
  • Veterinary Technician Specialist I/II: RVT with NAVTA specialty or recognized credentials
  • Skills: restraint of small/large animals, injections, IV catheter placement, EKG/Ultrasound/diagnostics, anesthesia induction

Responsibilities

  • Provide clinical assistance to professional staff and perform treatments for patients admitted to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital
  • Assist in one-on-one training of veterinary students and collaborate with specialists to deliver high-quality care
  • Support emergency/critical care operations and ensure infection control and patient safety
  • Maintain equipment and assist with procedures including vaccines, meds, catheter placements, and anesthesia

About this Position

The College of Veterinary Medicine Teaching Hospital at Oklahoma State University is seeking an enthusiastic person with a passion for small animals. Successful candidate will provide clinical assistance to professional staff and a variety of treatments to patients admitted to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH). Candidates will have the opportunity to actively participate in one-on-one training of veterinary students, as well as work alongside veterinary specialists to provide clients and patients with the highest standard of care.

This is a full-time position. Every full-time employee receives a full benefits package. The VTH is a 145,000 square foot, full-service veterinary teaching hospital providing 24 hour care for all domestic and selected exotic and wildlife species. The VTH admits more than 15,500 clinical cases per year and hospitalizes 5-8 ICU cases per day. Our hospital is equipped with digital radiography, MRI, CT, ultrasound, endoscopy, 24-hour access to full clinical pathology lab, oxygen cages, pulse oximetry, capnography, I-Stat point-of-care testing, telemetry, blood pressure and central venous pressure monitoring, Pleur-Evac® suction units, and ventilator therapy. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to interact with 20 small animal specialists, as well as a supportive group of interns and residents. This position is in the emergency/critical care area of the hospital.

Required Qualifications
  • High School/GED (degree must be conferred on or before agreed upon start date)
  • Veterinary Assistant: Two years related experience; or Associate of Science degree in Veterinary Technology from an AVMA accredited veterinary technology program with two years related experience; or Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences or related area; or DVM degree or equivalent.
  • Veterinary Technician I: Registered Veterinary Technician or completed Associate degree in Veterinary Technology and will sit for the Oklahoma State Board of Examiner's technician certifying exam and obtain Iicensure within
    120 days of hire. Experience with procedures such as administering vaccines/medications, placement of IV (peripheral, central, and urinary) catheters, suturing skin incisions/applying casts, EKG/Ultrasound/other diagnostic imaging/monitoring, inducing anesthesia by inhalation or
    intravenous injection, etc.
  • Veterinary Technician II: Three years' experience as a Veterinary Assistant/Technician or equivalent at an AVMA accredited teaching hospital, or large, multi-clinician private veterinary practice. Experience with procedures such as administering vaccines/medications, placement of IV (peripheral, central, and urinary) catheters, suturing skin incisions/applying casts, EKG/Ultrasound/other diagnostic imaging/monitoring, inducing anesthesia by inhalation or
    intravenous Injection, etc.
  • Veterinary Technician III: Six years' experience as a Veterinary Assistant/Technician or equivalent at an AVMA accredited teaching hospital, or large, multi-clinician private veterinary practice. Experience with procedures such as administering vaccines/medications, placement of IV (peripheral, central, and urinary) catheters, suturing skin incisions/applying casts, EKG/Ultrasound/other diagnostic imaging/monitoring, inducing anesthesia by inhalation or
    intravenous Injection, etc.
  • Senior Veterinary Technician: Eight years' experience as a Veterinary Assistant/Technician or equivalent at an AVMA accredited teaching hospital, or large, multi-clinician private veterinary practice with greater than one year
    experience within a specific specialty. Experience with procedures such as administering vaccines/medications, placement of IV (peripheral, central, and urinary) catheters, suturing skin incisions/applying casts, EKG/Ultrasound/other diagnostic imaging/monitoring, inducing anesthesia by inhalation or
    intravenous Injection, etc.
  • Veterinary Technician Specialist I: Registered Veterinary Technician. Veterinary Technician Specialist recognized by NAVTA; or have credentials in specialty that VTH defines as meriting recognition. Experience with procedures such as administering vaccines/medications, placement of IV (peripheral, central, and urinary) catheters, suturing skin incisions/applying casts, EKG/Ultrasound/other diagnostic imaging/monitoring, inducing anesthesia by inhalation or
    intravenous Injection, etc.
  • Veterinary Technician Specialist II: Five years of experience as Veterinary Technician Specialist recognized by NAVTA; or have credentials in specialty that VTH defines as meriting recognition. Experience with procedures such as administering vaccines/medications, placement of IV (peripheral, central, and urinary) catheters, suturing skin incisions/applying casts, EKG/Ultrasound/other diagnostic imaging/monitoring, inducing anesthesia by inhalation or
    intravenous Injection, etc.
  • Skills, Proficiencies, and/or Knowledge: Experience in restraint of small and large animals, administering injections, and placement of IV (peripheral, central, and urinary) catheters is essential. Must have knowledge of equipment used within VTH including, but not limited to: personal computer, telephone, copy machine, laser, video endoscope, diagnostic lab equipment, camera/video camera, electrodiagnostic equipment, etc. Must be physically capable of lifting animals weighing 50 pounds or greater onto exam tables and into elevated cages.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate's Veterinary Technology
  • Five years experience as a Veterinary Technician Specialist recognized by NAVTA or credentials in a specialty that VTH defines as meriting recognition. Ability to perform assigned tasks independently with minimal supervision.
  • Certifications, Registrations, and/or Licenses: Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT). Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS).
