Position Overview

Join our team as a Veterinary Assistant who supports the veterinarians and technicians in their daily tasks by cleaning and maintaining equipment, feeding, exercising and grooming patients, preparing and sanitizing surgery suites, restraining and handling patients, and performing clerical and administrative work. They deliver quality care for all patients and provide exceptional service.

Kleinpeter Veterinary Hospital in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, is a full-service animal hospital offering a broad range of services to support pets’ health at every stage of life. With a strong emphasis on compassionate care and clinical excellence, the team provides a client-centered experience.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide compassionate care to all patients
• Greet patients and their owners, record weight and vital signs, and accompany them to an examining room
• Triage patients, perform physical exams, treatments, and administer medication as directed by licensed veterinary technicians (LVTs)
• Calm and soothe anxious patients
• Assist doctors and technicians with medication administration or patient restraint
• Perform laboratory tests and take radiographs
• Operate and maintain hospital equipment (EKG, fluid pump, syringe pump, scales, anesthetic monitors, etc.)
• Fill prescriptions, calculate and administer medications, and maintain proper documentation and controlled substances security
• Feed patients as prescribed; record appetites and report unusual conditions
• Communicate positively with clients and help them feel comfortable leaving their pet
• Educate clients about insurance, wellness, and medicinal plans
• Maintain hospital cleanliness; clean equipment, kennels, and facilities; ensure safe chemical use; complete laundry
• Bath and care for overnight patients; ensure each animal is clean and groomed prior to release
• Adhere to hospital safety and wellness regulations
• Understand and carry out oral and written directions; maintain accurate medical records
• Show up for work regularly; full-time presence is essential for every shift
• Promote hospital products and services and support the organization
• Respond promptly to directions from the DVM or LVTs
• Perform additional duties as assigned by the Manager; may include duties in dentistry, surgery, emergency, radiology, cardiology, neurology, or internal medicine

Qualifications (Required)

• Applicants must be 18 years of age or older
• Experience in veterinary practices and ability to work closely with DVMs
• 1+ years of veterinary assistant or veterinary tech experience
• Surgery experience
• Proficiency in blood draws, anesthetic monitoring, radiology, and administering medications (controlled and non-controlled)

Schedule: Full-time, Monday through Friday; weekends required.
