Job summary

Mid North Animal Hospital in Lincoln Park, Chicago, IL is seeking a Veterinary Assistant to support veterinarians and technicians with patient care, lab work, and client education. Open to full-time and part-time applicants, with a pay range of $17.05–$18.50 per hour.

The role includes assisting in outpatient exams, surgery prep, radiographs, and routine in-house tests, with duties expanding to inventory management and customer service. Weekend availability is required.

Qualifications

• Previous veterinary experience preferred.
• Ability to work on weekends as required.
• Ability to lift patients and carry equipment up to 25 pounds; with assistance if over 25 pounds.
• Practice OSHA safety techniques including PPE.
• Basic math and the ability to calculate medication dosages.
• Basic computer skills, familiarity with MS Office applications.

Responsibilities

• Assist veterinarians in medicine, surgery, and related tasks.
• Take histories, vital signs, and weights during outpatient exams and educate clients.
• Prepare patients for surgery and monitor vital signs during procedures.
• Obtain samples and perform in-house laboratory testing; prepare specimens for outside labs.
• Take, develop, and maintain radiographs following safety procedures.
• Provide basic animal handling and restrain animals during exams.
• Administer and monitor medications, anesthesia, vaccines, and treatments as directed.
• Clean and restock exam rooms and assist with equipment and supplies.
• Demonstrate warmth, courtesy, and professionalism with clients and patients.
• Communicate with veterinarians and team members about patient plans and concerns.
