PetVet Care Centers' Broad Street Veterinary Hospital is currently seeking a Veterinary Assistant to join our team.

Broad Street Veterinary Hospital has been a cornerstone of Richmond, VA veterinary care since 1938, offering a full range of services from routine wellness and vaccinations to advanced surgery, diagnostics, senior pet care, and grooming.

Position Overview

As a Veterinary Assistant, you will support veterinarians and technicians in daily tasks, including cleaning and maintaining equipment, feeding, exercising, and grooming patients, preparing and sanitizing surgery suites, restraining and handling patients, and performing clerical and administrative work. The role requires high-quality patient care and exceptional service for all clients and patients.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide compassionate care to all patients.
• Greet patients and owners upon arrival and record vital signs.
• Triage patients, perform physical exams, and administer medication as directed by licensed veterinary technicians.
• Calm and soothe anxious patients.
• Assist doctors and technicians with medication administration and patient restraint.
• Perform laboratory tests and take radiographs.
• Operate and maintain hospital equipment (EKG, fluid pump, syringe pump, scales, anesthetic monitors).
• Fill prescriptions, calculate and administer medications, and maintain proper documentation and security of controlled drugs.
• Feed patients as prescribed, record appetites, and report any unusual conditions or abnormal behaviors.
• Communicate positively with clients and ensure they leave satisfied.
• Educate clients about insurance, wellness, and medical plans.
• Maintain cleanliness of the hospital, including equipment, kennels, and facilities; use chemicals safely and complete laundry.
• Provide bath and care for overnight patients and ensure proper grooming before release.
• Adhere to hospital safety and wellness regulations.
• Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
• Maintain accurate medical records.
• Show up for work regularly; full‑time presence is essential for every shift.
• Promote hospital products and services and support the organization.
• Respond respectfully and urgently to directions given by the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and licensed technicians.
• Perform any other duties as assigned by the Manager; may include specialty areas such as dentistry, surgery, emergency, radiology, cardiology, neurology, or internal medicine.

Schedule

• Monday–Friday, 9:30 AM–6:00 PM; no weekends, overnights, or after‑hours shifts. Paid holidays.
• Must be available to work Monday through Friday.

Pay Range: $16 — $21 USD
