Job summary

Job Overview

The Veterinary Assistant supports veterinarians and veterinary technicians by ensuring high‑quality care, providing client education, and maintaining a safe, organized hospital environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Act as an extra set of eyes, ears, and hands for the veterinary team, improving productivity and quality of care.
  • Communicate effectively with veterinarians, technicians, and other staff to maintain patient flow.
  • Provide professional, efficient service, performing procedures that do not require veterinarian or technician assistance and completing preparatory work for other procedures.
  • Ensure client and pet comfort, gather client history, and maintain accurate medical charts.
  • Use safe restraining techniques, follow standard protocols, and keep examination rooms, labs, and treatment areas clean and sterile.
  • Assist with surgery as applicable and use technical skills within state practice acts and NAVTA guidelines.
  • Educate clients on optimum wellness plans, preventive care, and hospital services.
  • Mentor other paraprofessionals within the hospital.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Skills
  • Certificate of completion from a NAVTA approved Veterinary Assistant program or equivalent education, training, and experience.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Minimum of one year related customer‑service experience.
  • At least 18 years old to perform duties involving radiography.
  • Strong communication, organizational, problem‑solving, and client‑service skills.
  • Ability to multi‑task, manage conflicting priorities, and work a flexible schedule including weekends and evenings.
  • Physical ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, and manipulate up to 50 pounds.
  • Good hand‑eye coordination, arm‑hand dexterity, and visual acuity for operating equipment.
