Outside of downtown is a large military base, Fort Detrick. Just outside the city proper, but still within Frederick County, you can find rolling hills, wineries, orchards and a strong agricultural presence. You can also hike part the Appalachian Trail. Frederick is part of the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area - located less than one hour from Washington, D.C., Baltimore, and about 45 minutes away from Gettysburg, PA.
