Job description

Reporting directly to the Director of Animal Services, is responsible for providing veterinary care to sheltered animals and supervision support to the staff of the Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter (WCRAS), in support of the live outcome vision.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

• Examine and provide various treatments to shelter animals
• Develops, reviews, revises, and monitors adherence to medical protocols
• Responsible for the surgical schedule and assuring that spay/neuter days are adequate to provide timely surgery to shelter animals
• Performs high volume, high quality spay/neuter on shelter animals and free roaming cats
• Perform and direct other soft tissue and orthopedic surgeries (as resources and training permit) as approved by the Shelter Director
• Contribute to the programs and services that support the shelter's live outcome mission
• Responsible for compliance with all shelter policies and local, state, and federal regulations
• Responsible for upkeep of the surgical suite including maintaining inventory
• Works with administrative supervisor to purchase necessary medications
• Maintains controlled substance records as required by the drug enforcement agency
• Works with shelter staff and volunteers on infectious disease recognition, treatment and prevention, and monitors flow of animals as related to infectious diseases
• Performs duties as required under State Health and Safety Code regarding rabies quarantine
• Accurately maintain all required records in the shelter's database
• Coordinates with Shelter Director and/or Operations Manager to schedule outside veterinarian services for shelter animals
• Builds and maintains relationships with other veterinarians and shelters in the community
• Perform and direct euthanasia administration in accordance with AVMA and ASV standards
• Performs special duties as assigned

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

• Position involves prolonged sitting at a workstation, reaching, walking, twisting, bending, squatting, kneeling, repetitive motions, and standing
• Position requires grasping, repetitive hand movement, and fine motor coordination preparing statistical reports and data, using a computer keyboard
• Position involves lifting and carrying of animals and equipment weighing up to fifty (50) pounds, or up to one hundred (100) pounds with assistance, and exertion of up to twenty-five (25) pounds of force to move objects
• Ability to hear and/or see alert cues regarding animal and staff security

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS

• Work is primarily indoors in an air-conditioned environment
• May work outside in inclement weather
• Frequent handling of animals, including contact with waste and blood
• Exposure to unpleasant smells and a noisy and wet environment associated with a shelter
• Frequent exposure animals that are agitated or injured that may attempt to bite or scratch

IRREGULAR HOURS

• Work outside of regular shelter hours, including weekends, evenings and holidays
• Essential personnel for emergency situations; at discretion of department director

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Graduation from a college or university accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree and licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Texas
• 1 (one) year of professional veterinary experience in animal medicine, surgery or other closely related areas
• DEA license to prescribe controlled substances
• Working knowledge of specific job-related technology, including lab equipment
• Knowledge in animal health and well-being and nutritional needs

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
Required

• Texas Veterinary Medical License
• Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) License

Required within thirty (30) days of employment

• Valid driver’s license

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Two (2) years’ experience as a practicing veterinarian in a high-volume, fast-paced solo setting

Experience working in a no-kill shelter and/or in a high-volume, spay/neuter program

Knowledge of animal services and related programs

Excellent interpersonal skills in dealing with the public and staff

Knowledge of principles of supervision and teambuilding

Experience working with volunteers
