Job summary

McLeod County, MN is seeking a part-time transportation driver to provide rides for local veterans to VA medical and claims appointments. The role involves operating a Veterans Van or county fleet, performing safety checks, and ensuring passenger safety and confidentiality.

  • Assists passengers with entry, securing seat belts, and wheelchair procedures as needed.
  • Maintains confidentiality of rider appointments and health information.

Position Summary

To provide transportation for local veterans to U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs medical and claims appointments as scheduled by either the VA Medical Centers or the VA Regional Office.

Supplemental Information
  • 2026 approved wage is $23.08 per hour
  • This position will be posted until filled
  • First round of interviews will be Thursday, September 17, 2026.
Essential Functions/Responsibilities

Duties listed are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Position Duties
  • Completes initial and annual driver’s training requirements as established by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and McLeod County.
  • Downloads and prints trip schedules from email messages sent via the internet.
  • Operates the assigned dedicated Veterans Van or County Fleet vehicle in accordance with the published schedule; which may require early morning starts, extended hours and weekend duty including holidays.
  • Performs pre-operational equipment inspections in accordance with established procedures and the specific operator’s manual for the vehicle to be used. Tops off fluids as required. Reports any problems to the Veterans Service Officer.
  • Assists passengers when entering and exiting the vehicle. Ensures they are safely secured with seat belts or in the case of the handicapped van, that wheel chairs are secured in accordance with the operator’s manual.
  • Operates a global position device (GPS) as a navigational aid.
  • Makes operational reports by cellular phone as directed prior to, during and upon completion of each trip.
  • Maintains confidentiality of van rider appointments and health information.
  • Performs refueling operations and uses a variety of credit cards depending upon the location and vehicle used.
  • Performs post-operational equipment inspections in accordance with established procedures and the specific operator’s manual for the vehicle used. Washes and cleans vehicle as required. Reports any problems to the Veterans Service Officer.

Work Schedule
  • This is a temporary part-time position consisting of up to a maximum of 67 shifts each year. Scheduled hours will vary and may include some early morning, evening, extended, weekend and holiday shifts.
Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent, with prior responsible related work experience sufficient to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with commercial passenger conveyance experience, experience with operating handicapped accessible vehicles and/or extensive experience operating vehicles in adverse weather conditions.
Required Certifications/Licenses
  • Valid Minnesota Class D Driver’s License with no moving violations at the time of application and this license must be maintained throughout employment.
  • Valid proof of insurance.
Relationships
  • Regular interaction with County and Federal staff.
  • Interaction with the public.
  • Local, regional, state and federal agencies.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • No direction supervision of employees.
Working Conditions
  • Work is mainly performed in a vehicle.
  • Requires driving to other sites and facilities in the state.
Physical Requirements Of This Position
  • Desk work involving use of a computer, telephone, and other devices.
  • Communicate effectively with County staff, Federal staff, and citizens.
  • Ability to read screens and documents.
  • Ability to drive in various light, adverse weather and heavy traffic conditions.
  • Ability to type and use a computer or mobile device.
  • Office work may include reaching for documents, grasping documents, standing, walking, and repetitive motions.
  • Lift and carry files and material weighing up to 50 pounds regularly.
  • Ability to assist passengers when exiting vehicles while sitting in a wheelchair and physically able to properly secure a wheelchair in a confined space.
