Job summary

State of Iowa, Iowa Workforce Development, seeks a Veteran Career Planner to join the Des Moines team. You will assess veterans’ skills, identify career goals, and deliver individualized career services within an integrated office setting.

Hybrid telework available after six months, with a full-time schedule (Mon–Fri, 8:00 AM–4:30 PM) at the Des Moines location, 200 Army Post Rd. You will coordinate with veterans, provide job development, and maintain case notes to support JVSG/NSG program goals.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in any field.
  • Four years of full-time work experience in career services, teaching or training to improve skills, job coaching, providing human services to individuals in need, sales, customer service, call center operations, or human-resources-related services involving interviewing, reviewing job applications, conducting employment-related assessments, or job placement.

Responsibilities

  • Establish rapport with veterans and assess their skills and background.
  • Identify career goals and objectives and develop individual employment plans.
  • Provide and document individualized career services as part of an integrated office team.
  • Conduct ongoing follow-up, job development, and meaningful activities to enhance employability.

Iowa Workforce Development (IWD) is seeking a Veteran Career Planner to join our team at the IowaWORKS office in Des Moines, Iowa.

Position Details
  • Location: 200 Army Post Rd., Des Moines, IA
  • Schedule: Full-time | Monday – Friday | 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM
  • Work Flexibility: Hybrid telework and alternate schedules available after six months of employment and training have been completed.
Position Description:

We are hiring - and you can make a difference! We have an opportunity at Iowa Workforce Development to serve as a Veteran Career Planner. You can make a difference working with veterans seeking assistance with their employment and training goals. You will assist veterans by establishing rapport, completing assessments of their skills and background, and identifying career goals and objectives, just to name a few!

Provide and document individualized career services to veterans and other eligible populations as part of an integrated office team. Services include:

  • Facilitate and document individualized career services for veterans with special employment and training needs as part of an integrated career services team.
  • Provide employment and training services to veterans and other eligible individuals under the Jobs for Veterans State Grant (JVSG/NSG).
  • Motivate, mentor, and coach veterans through continued and regular contact regarding employment services.
  • Provide individualized career services, including:
    • Comprehensive and specialized assessments of skill levels and service needs.
    • Development of an individual employment plan identifying employment goals, achievement objectives, and appropriate services.
    • Group and individual counseling and career planning.
    • Short-term prevocational services, including learning, communication, interviewing, punctuality, personal maintenance, and professional conduct skills to prepare individuals for unsubsidized employment or training.
  • Develop and maintain documented plans of action and ensure proper and timely case notes.
  • Conduct ongoing follow-up and meaningful activities, including job development, to enhance veterans’ employability and support successful outcomes.
  • Maintain weekly contact with all service-managed veterans to monitor progress, provide support, and address employment and training needs.

Conduct Foreign Labor Certification (FLC) inspections in various locations to ensure housing meets the regulations and requirements under FLC and complete and submit required FLC documents and reports. Attend FLC meetings, conferences, and training as required.

Veteran Employment Services
  • Interview new veteran applicants with significant barriers to employment (SBEs) for service.
  • Coordinate with Business Engagement Team(s) and Local Veterans Employment Representatives to match Veterans and spouses with job opportunities and provide labor exchange services leading to job placement.
  • Analyze priority services to veterans and provide reports to management summarizing monthly activity.
  • Monitor Veterans Performance Standards for achievement of goals and direction of veteran services efforts.
  • Submit all required reports, success stories, and follow-up documentation on a timely basis.
  • Communicate and provide weekly updates/reports as requested by leadership.
  • Participate in all Office of Veteran Workforce Services meetings and ensure success stories are shared with the team and local leadership.
  • Participate in marketing efforts, job fairs, and other events to create content and success stories for newsletters and other Iowa WORKS for Veteran social media communication.

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:
1) Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in any field.
2) Four years of full-time work experience in career services, teaching or training to improve skills, job coaching, providing human services to individuals in need, sales, customer service, call center operations, or human-resources-related services involving interviewing, reviewing job applications, conducting employment-related assessments, or job placement.
3) A total of four years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number two), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university coursework in any field equals one year of full-time experience.
4) Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes twelve months of full-time work as a Workforce Associate.
