Helmwood Veterinary Clinic in Elizabethtown, KY is offering a veterinary externship to enrolled students with mentorship from senior clinicians. Externs will gain experience in histories, exams, treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry, and observing surgeries, while communicating with the team and clients.

Externships range from two to eight weeks, with a stipend opportunity to help travel and living costs. All veterinary students are welcome to participate during clinical education.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled veterinary student participating in externship.
• Preference for clinical exposure and mentorship opportunities.
• Interest in hands-on learning with supervision.

Responsabilités

• Gather patient histories and perform physical exams under supervision.
• Assist or perform treatment planning, diagnostics, and dentistry as allowed.
• Observe or assist surgical procedures and participate in medical management.
• Communicate with medical team, staff, and clients to support care.

Description & Requirements

Helmwood Veterinary Clinic is a long-standing hospital in Elizabethtown, KY. We will be celebrating 50 years in 2024! Two of our doctors have practiced at Helmwood for over 20 years. They welcome the opportunity to mentor new grads and veterinary students.

Students will work closely with the supervising veterinarian to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creation of treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing/assisting or performing surgical procedures, and medical management of patients. In addition to practicing their clinical skills, student externs will have the opportunity to practice their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.

Most externship experiences range from two to eight weeks depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students (regardless of class year) are encouraged to participate in NVA externships.
