Job summary

Mount Airy Veterinary Associates in Mount Airy, Maryland is seeking a Veterinary Assistant to join our small animal practice. Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Basic computer skills with familiarity in PM software and MS Office.
• Experience with animals preferred; veterinary background valued.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and handle animals up to 130 pounds.
• Able to work safely around chemicals, anesthetic gases, and zoonotic diseases.
• Maintain composure and professionalism in high-stress situations.

Responsibilities

• Provide compassionate, professional care to patients and clients at all times.
• Communicate clearly with clients, doctors, and team members, including answering phones and routing inquiries.
• Assist the veterinarian during exams, diagnostics, treatments, and surgical procedures.
• Safely restrain animals using low-stress handling techniques.
• Administer medications, vaccines, collect lab samples, and perform basic lab tests as directed.
• Create, review, and enter treatment plans in the medical record system.
• Educate clients on vaccines, medications, and care plans.
• Record patient information and maintain organized medical records.
• Enter charges and assist with client checkout as needed.
• Keep exam rooms and hospital spaces clean, stocked, and well maintained.
• Demonstrate reliability, punctuality, and support for hospital operations.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
