Job summary

Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Inc. is seeking a highly experienced Chief Engineer to oversee operation and maintenance of vessel systems, propulsion, and safety procedures.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalence plus three or more years of experience as a Maritime Vessel Chief Engineer, Merchant Mariner Credentials.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain vessel equipment and systems per procedures.
  • Perform engine room rounds and maintain logs, oil record and EPA logs.
  • Maintain and oversee maintenance schedules, hours, production and repair.
  • Ensure proper oil/water levels and manage filtration in propulsion systems.
  • Operate main refrigeration, HVAC, electrical and water systems.
  • Maintain maintenance log programs and safety procedures.
  • Oversee ship safety manual, PPE, SDS structure and lockout/tagout procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Because Eastern Shipbuilding is continually growing to meet the needs of our customers, and your duties and responsibilities may be different from those described.

  • Operate and maintain all vessel equipment and systems, ability to recognize normal operation of all equipment.
  • Performs scheduled rounds, filling out and maintaining engine room logbook, oil record book, sewage discharge and EPA logs
  • Maintains and oversight of all Maintenance schedules, operational hours, equipment production and repair.
  • Maintains proper oil and water levels and manages filtration in all propulsion equipment, main engines, reduction gears, PTO gears, servo system, bow thruster engine and gear.
  • Operates and maintains main refrigeration plant, HVAC, electrical room, fresh and grey water systems
  • Set’s and maintain all maintenance log programs
  • Oversee all ship safety manual and procedures to include proper PPE, SDS structure and Vessel Lock out/Tags Plus procedures
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Extensive experience in ship navigational equipment operations.
  • Advanced certifications in maritime safety and leadership.
  • Strong understanding of maritime laws and regulations.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills.
  • Valid MMC, TWIC Card, USCG Medical Certificate (with valid STCW date).
  • Advanced first aid and CPR certification.
  • Experience as Designated Duty Engineer (DDE)
  • Minimum two (2) years' experience sailing as an Engineer
  • Proficiency in emergency response and safety procedures.
  • Excellent decision-making and problem-solving skills.
  • Good physical health and stamina.
  • Ability to pass a background check and health examination.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

May directly or indirectly supervise ship crew for sea trials.

REQUIREMENTS
Education/ Experience: High school diploma or GED equivalence plus three or more years of experience as a Maritime Vessel Chief Engineer, Merchant Mariner Credentials

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing throughout the workday. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must be physically and medically qualified to wear all required personal protective equipment, as prescribed under Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards. The employee must be able to work in confined spaces and withstand extreme heat and cold in an outside climate or confined space.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The employee may be exposed to the risk of electrical shock, moving mechanical parts, vibration, fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, continual loud noise, and other hazards found in a heavy industrial shipyard environment.
