Vertex Long Read Sequencing Co-Op is a 6-month experiential training program for students pursuing an advanced degree in Biological Sciences or related fields. You will work on RNA sequencing applications, plasmid integration analyses, and direct RNA sequencing to support monoclonal antibody projects.

The program emphasizes mentorship, flexible options, and exposure to CGT AD workflows in a collaborative Boston environment.

Qualifications

• Master's or PhD in Systems Biology, Computational Biology, Developmental Biology, or related field.
• Experience with long-read sequencing workflows and data analysis.
• Proficiency in Python or R, and Linux environments.
• Familiarity with bioinformatics tools such as minimap2 and samtools.

Responsibilities

• Perform RNA sequencing and plasmid integration analyses to support monoclonal antibody projects.
• Prepare sequencing libraries and evaluate dataset quality and integrity.
• Analyze data with DESeq2 and GSEA to derive biological insights.
• Present results and contribute to method development and optimization.

What you will be doing:The long sequencing project will cover various applications listed below:RNA Sequencing for modification (m6a, m5c, pseudouridine, etc.) and isoform analysis to characterize stem cells and stem cell derived pancreatic islets.Conduct plasmid integration analysis for development and assessment of monoclonal antibody-producing cell lines, using targeted or whole genome sequencing.Direct RNA or cDNA sequencing to verify monoclonal antibody heavy- and light-chain sequences and support variant calling.Evaluate mRNA integrity and polyA tail characterization using direct RNA sequencing.Required Skills:Nucleic acid extraction, cDNA preparation and sequencing library preparationAbility to design and analyze experiments for developing analytical assayExperience with Oxford Nanopore systemsProficiency with R or Python, Linux system and high process computing systemFamiliarity with bioinformatics tools such as minimap2 and samtoolsData analysis tools such as DESEQ2 and Gene Set Enrichment AnalysisKey Deliverables at Project Completion :Establish workflows/assay to support applications of long read sequencingExecution of the experiments and analyzing the dataset with statistical approachKey Learnings Expected:Knowledge pertaining to developing an assay and bringing it through feasibility assessment such as accuracy and precision.Deeper understanding into principles of stem cell and pancreatic islets biologyPresentation of large dataset and experimental findings.Qualifications:Master's / PhDMajors: Systems Biology, Computational Biology, Developmental Biology, Stem Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Biological Engineering, etc.Program Details:Full-time, paid co-op $35.00 – 50.00 USD/hourProgram Dates: January – July 2027Application Deadline: November 15th, 2026At Vertex, we believe that when you feel your best, you can perform at your best.
