Description of Work

The North Carolina Zoo is seeking an enthusiastic Vehicle Supervisor to oversee vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair operations.

This position manages the computerized work order system, prioritizes work assignments, orders parts and equipment, and supervises four Vehicle/Equipment Repair Technicians.

Responsibilities include hiring, performance management, evaluations, time management, and supporting staff development for currently four staff mechanics.

The supervisor ensures all Zoo motorized vehicles and equipment remain in safe, reliable working conditions through preventive maintenance and repair, in compliance with State and Federal regulations, including OSHA requirements and proper handling of hazardous materials.

Equipment overseen includes trams, buses, heavy and light trucks, passenger vehicles, utility vehicles, agricultural and construction equipment, small-engine tools, generators, and welders.

The position functions as a working supervisor and performs inspections, maintenance, and repairs as needed.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prioritize, plan, and direct the work of Vehicle/Equipment Repair Technicians in State inspections, service, maintenance, and repair of components of a wide range of vehicles and equipment to include the engine or electric motor, drivetrain, tires/tracks, suspension, steering, cooling systems, various brake systems, electrical systems, computer system and diagnostics, hydraulics, and generally all components except detailed body repair.
  • Manages work orders and preventative maintenance through the computerized maintenance management system; currently Facility Dude/Brightly.
  • Assists staff in setting goals; encourages growth and professional development; conducts performance evaluations; provides feedback; provides coaching and counseling; leads conflict resolution; and imposes disciplinary action if necessary.
  • Responsible to ensure work is conducted in a safe manner, and all OSHA, State, and Zoo safety guidelines are followed. Conducts tailgate safety sessions as appropriate.
  • Keeps department’s vacant positions filled following DNCR hiring process.
  • Position is considered a working supervisor and performs inspections, maintenance, and repairs when supervisory duties are completed.

Recruitment Range: $52,592 - $62,592

Position/Physical Requirements

Work schedule: currently Monday – Friday, 7am – 4pm including a one hour lunch period. This position is required to work a weekend and holiday on-call rotation.

Job offer is contingent upon passing a pre-employment physical and drug screen conducted by assigned provider, as well as random drug testing.

This position is designated as Essential/Mandatory and is required to work adverse weather events including overnight stay and may be assigned to work special events and special/seasonal needs.

Must be able to work overtime or be called back into work at any time, day or night.

Must be available for on-call and emergency callback within 45 minutes.

Required to participate in the Zoo's Occupational Health Program due to contact with equipment used in animal containment areas.
