A local educational institution in Walnutport is seeking a Vehicle Assistant to ensure the safe and courteous transport of students. Responsibilities

  • Assists students entering and exiting the vehicle.
  • Maintains safe conduct on the vehicle to and from school.
  • Completes reports and paperwork accurately.
  • Provides appropriate intervention in conflict situations.
  • Assist the driver in emergencies.
  • Complete transportation reports accurately and on time.
  • Learn vehicle run locations on assigned routes.
  • Report unsafe conduct with incident reports as needed.
  • Assist driver in reporting vehicle accidents using department procedures.
  • Be courteous to parents, students, and staff.
  • Recognize individual student needs while maintaining order on the bus.
  • Supervise student behavior and intervene per CPI standards.
  • Collect students’ personal items left on the bus and return them to school officials.
  • Perform duties assigned by Transportation Supervisor/Manager.

Position Definition

The Vehicle Assistant shall have the primary responsibility of assisting the driver in providing safe and courteous transportation of students.

Relationship

The Vehicle Assistant will be directly responsible to the Transportation Supervisor.

Qualifications

Education/Experience:

  • Valid driver’s license, preferred.
  • Experience working with children, preferred.

Skills/Knowledge:

  • Ability to utilize technology effectively, including, but not limited to, internet and email.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work in a team environment.
  • Demonstrates the ability to maintain complete confidentiality.
  • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills, demonstrated by patience, understanding, and congeniality.

Physical:

  • Must be able to physically assist students entering and exiting the vehicle.
  • Ability to stand, bend, stoop, sit, lift, reach, and communicate (vision, hearing, and speech) to effectively carry out functions, duties, and responsibilities.
  • Ability to independently ambulate in and around work areas.
  • Ability to travel to and from assigned work locations without employer support.
  • Ability to exhibit appropriate manual dexterity to effectively carry out functions, duties, and responsibilities.
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time (3 hours).
  • Must be able to push and pull wheelchairs safely and attach wheelchairs safely to vehicles for transportation to and from assigned schools.
Authority

The Vehicle Assistant will have the authority to perform all functions listed below in accordance with established policies and procedures.

Functions/Duties/Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function/duty/responsibility at acceptable standards. In accordance with both state and/or federal law, reasonable accommodations will be considered upon employee request.

Essential:

  • Cordially greets students upon arrival at vehicle.
  • Assists students entering and exiting the vehicle.
  • Responsible for maintaining safe conduct on the vehicle to and from school.
  • Responsible for tending to students’ needs on the vehicle in a pleasant and courteous manner.
  • Assists the driver in any emergency situation.
  • Completes reports and paperwork required by the Transportation Department accurately and by given timelines.
  • Learns vehicle run locations on assigned run.
  • Responsible for reporting unsafe conduct on vehicle by completing an incident report and following department procedures on an as needed basis.
  • Responsible for assisting the driver in reporting vehicle accidents by completing an accident form and following department procedures.
  • Courteous to parents, students, and classroom staff.
  • Ability to recognize individual student capabilities and exceptions while maintaining order on the bus and while administering to students' individual needs, as required.
  • Occupies a seat that provides the best opportunity for student supervision while the bus is in motion.
  • Provides appropriate intervention in conflict situations according to CPI standards; notifies supervisor when necessary.
  • Collects student’s personal items left on the bus and turns them over to school officials.

Secondary:

  • Satisfactorily performs and/or carries out all functions/responsibilities/tasks assigned by the Transportation Supervisor, Transportation Manager, or Director of Transportation Services.
