SUMMARY

The VCS Substitute Teacher is responsible to perform the instructional and classroom management processes for teachers who are absent for a day or longer periods of time.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Maintains discipline and classroom control that fosters a safe and positive learning environment for all students and staff in accordance with school and county policies.
• Ensures the adequate supervision to assure health, welfare, and safety of all students.
• Oversees students outside of the classroom including in the hallways, recess, and cafeteria.
• Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
• Reports to the office upon arrival at school; checks the mailbox of the absent teacher for materials requiring immediate attention; requests clarification of school rules and procedures, if necessary.
• Reports all student injuries, accidents, illnesses, and discipline problems to the appropriate authority immediately or as soon as is reasonably possible.
• Implements lesson plans, while ensuring the integrity of academic time and in a manner which motivates students to learn and participate.
• Organizes students for effective instruction.
• Dismisses all students from the classroom before leaving the building.
• Completes a Substitute Teacher Report for the regular classroom teacher.
• Collects and places students’ papers in the assigned area.
• Returns instructional materials, equipment, and keys to the proper place.
• Complies with and supports school and state regulations and policies.
• Performs other related duties as assigned by administrator(s) in accordance with school/state policies and practices.

QUALIFICATIONS

• High School Diploma or equivalent certifications.
• Speaks English at an idiomatic level.
• Good communication, problem solving, and priority setting skills as well as maintaining an overall positive and professional attitude /disposition.
• Ability to effectively plan, organize and implement educational activities.
• Knowledge and implementation of relevant technology.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Sitting, standing, bending, kneeling, squatting, crawling, stooping, walking, and the ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
• Manual dexterity with the use of hands and fingers to feel objects, tools, and controls.
• Sighted with color, peripheral, near, and far vision.
• Hearing and speaking.
• Excellent English communication skills.
