Job Description
The coach reports to the head coach and athletic director, providing overall objectives and final evaluation in conjunction with the school principal. The coach may advise, coordinate and support staff of school coaches.
Qualifications
- Ability to organize and supervise a total sports program.
- Previous successful coaching experience in assigned sport (preferred).
- Substantial knowledge of technical aspects of the sport and continuous learning of new theories and procedures.
- Role model for student athletes through instruction and actions.
General
- Influences community image; responsibilities include public exposure and maintaining sportsmanship and mental health.
- Position includes extended hours, risk of injury, and procedural responsibilities.
- Common sense and good judgment expected; evaluation yearly with possible renewal.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Knowledge of athletic policies approved by the Rowan Salisbury Schools Board of Education and responsible for implementation.
- Knowledge of existing system, state, and league regulations; consistently implements and interprets them for staff.
- Understands administrative command line and refers requests or grievances through proper channels; attends required meetings.
Staff Responsibilities
- Establish philosophy, skills, and techniques for assistants; design conferences and clinics to ensure staff awareness.
- Train, inform, and encourage professional growth; attend clinic sessions.
- Delegate duties, supervise implementation, analyze effectiveness, and evaluate assistants at season’s end.
- Maintain discipline, address grievances, and increase morale and cooperation.
- Perform other duties assigned by the athletic director/principal.
Administrative Duties
- Provide safeguards for maintenance and protection of equipment.
- Advise head coach and recommend policy, method, or procedural changes.
Student Responsibilities
- Mentor athletes; promote character traits (trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, citizenship).
- Monitor academic performance and conduct.
- Provide assistance, guidance, and safety during practices, games, and travel.
- Disseminate training rules, schedule, calendar, and sport regulations to athletes and parents.
- Follow injury, medical, and emergency protocols.
- Direct student managers, assistants, and statisticians.
- Assist athletes in college or advanced education selection.
Finance, Facility, and Equipment
- Accountable for all equipment.
- Mark and identify equipment before issuing or storing.
- Monitor equipment rooms and coach’s offices; authorize access.
- Ensure athletes remain in authorized areas only.
- Inspect facilities before and after events for cleanliness.
- Instill respect for equipment and property.
Public Relations
- Promote sport within school by recruiting new athletes; promote externally via media or community programs.
- Maintain positive relations with media, booster club, parents, officials, volunteers, and fans.
