Job summary

United States Sugar Corporation in Florida seeks a Yard Switch Operator to support rail operations in Clewiston and Bryant Yard(s). You will operate yard switches, line trains, and assist conductors to move cars safely within yard environments.

The role requires strict safety adherence, signaling and radio communication, and the ability to work with yardmasters, remote control operators, engineers, and conductors. Shift work including nights and weekends is expected.

Qualifications

  • Must pass tests measuring basic skills with a minimum of 85%
  • Must complete all tests within the first 90 days
  • Must have a valid driver’s license Class E or above
  • Must be able to work in either Clewiston or Bryant Yard(s)
  • Ability to read, speak and write English
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations pertaining to the job
  • Ability to work the posted schedule including shift work, overtime, nights and weekends
  • Educational and prior work experience will be considered

Job Location: UNITED STATES SUGAR AGRICULTURE

Job Responsibilities
  • Operate switches in any area of track
  • Safely transport personnel as needed
  • Ensure handbrakes are applied in rail yards
  • Perform brake test and customary car inspections
  • Line trains in and out of rail yards
  • Assist Conductors to safely expedite train movements in and out of rail yards
  • Assist train crews with point protection
  • Assist in lacing train line air hoses and bleeding off cars
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must pass all company designated tests designed to measure basic skills, job skills, mechanical aptitude and / or other interests, skills and characteristics with a minimum of 85%
  • Must have all test(s) satisfactorily completed within the first 90 days
  • Must have a valid driver’s license Class E or above
  • Must have successfully completed the TOST/Ramsey Test
  • Must be able to work in either Clewiston or Bryant Yard(s)
  • Ability to maintain clear and proper communication by hand signals, radio and lanterns with Yardmasters, Remote Control Operators, Engineers and Conductors
  • Check switch points for proper alignment
  • Ability to read, speak and write English
  • Ability to work with others and or alone with minimum supervision
  • Ability to follow instructions and communicate information pertaining to the job
  • Ability to follow proper safety and housekeeping procedures pertaining to the area
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations pertaining to the job
  • Ability to work the posted schedule in a production environment including shift work, overtime as necessary, holidays, nights and weekends
  • No active disciplinary action and good work history
  • Educational and pervious work experience will be considered

  • Stand for long periods of timeSpecific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Visibility must extend to 62’ and beyond.
  • Ability to operate and use all equipment necessary and use common office equipment
  • Ability to move or handle various items generally weighing between 0-75 pounds. Ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds.
  • Ability to bend, climb and walk significant distances
  • Mount and dismount locomotive and check switch points for proper alignment
