Position Information
This position is located in the Cobb County Water System, System Maintenance Division.
Shift: F; 10-hour shifts a week, Monday through Thursday or Tuesday through Friday, 6:30 am – 5 pm.
Shift rotations include working days, nights, call‑outs, standby, holidays, and weekends in any region assigned.
Essential Functions
- Installs, maintains, repairs, and replaces water and sewer lines and related system components: locates manholes, service connections, valves and other utilities, assists with new sewer tap installation, clears debris, inspects and evaluates system condition, diagnoses leaks, blockages, or other problems, excavates around infrastructure, installs repair fittings, replaces service lines, performs confined‑space entries as required, cleans manholes and lines, changes out sewer rings and lids on manholes.
- Gathers tools and equipment needed to complete work activities; picks up and transports materials, tools, and supplies; cleans and washes equipment and tools; performs preventive maintenance and minor repairs; notifies supervisor of needed equipment replacements and repairs.
- Performs related activities: saw cuts driveways, sidewalks, curbs, and roads during repair; assists with preparation and restoration of landscape, property, and other areas to preconstruction conditions; installs sod, applies seed, hay, pine straw, and lime where needed.
- Operates and maintains a camera, shovels, sharpshooter, probing rod, jet hose, jackhammer, pipe saw, hand saw, chainsaw, pipe cutters, various hand tools, hatchets, machetes, post-hole digger, trash pump, hand pump, or other equipment as necessary.
- Adheres to established safety procedures: monitors work environment and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees, other individuals, equipment, and property; flags and directs traffic and places markers, signs, and cones around project or work site to ensure safety of crew and the traveling public; wears personal protective equipment.
- Provides emergency coverage as directed or required and works on standby status according to established departmental schedules.
- Performs manual work functions associated with construction and maintenance of water and sewer infrastructure: installs and repairs pipe (laying and cutting pipes), cuts and repairs sewer taps, installs and repairs manholes, valve boxes, clears sewer pipe obstructions, assists equipment operators with site preparation and operation of jet‑vac equipment, performs related labor.
- Assists in documenting locations of existing manholes using Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment.
- Assists in condition assessment of existing sewer infrastructure: takes visual and electronic measurements, performs smoke testing, enters manholes to place and remove flow meters and CCTV equipment.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Previous experience in construction, infrastructure maintenance, or a related field preferred.
Licenses and Certifications
- Valid Driver's License preferred.
- Must possess and maintain the following certifications within nine months of hire: Confined Space Entry, Trenching and Excavation, and Flagger.
Physical Abilities
Tasks require the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, but typically also involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20–50 pounds); may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 100 pounds).
Sensory Requirements
Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, odors, sounds, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, smoke, extreme temperatures, extreme noises, hazardous materials, unsafe structures, heights, confined spaces, machinery, vibrations, falling objects, electric currents, traffic hazards, animal/wildlife attacks, animal bites, toxic agents, violence, disease, or pathogenic substances or explosive environments.
