Job summary

City of Amarillo is seeking a Utility Worker – Collection to perform curbside refuse collection and related labor tasks. Will assist with loading, direct truck operations, and maintenance of equipment as directed.

Work shifts include evenings, weekends, holidays; weather essential position. Requires a valid Texas driver’s license; prior maintenance or cleanup experience is a plus; training provided.

Qualifications

• Basic reading and arithmetic; ability to follow directions.
• Ability to learn to operate collection equipment and tools.

Responsibilities

• Picks up bags and debris from curb and loads into the truck.
• Directs driver in backing and unloading of trucks on route.

SUMMARY

Under the supervision of a supervisor, and/or Equipment Operator performs a variety of general unskilled manual work in the collection of household refuse, limbs and brush, and bulk items placed out for collection. Also, performs general cleanup, maintenance and unskilled labor tasks at the paint shop, transfer station or landfill as directed by supervisor. This position will be required to work shifts including evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime as needed by the department, and during inclement weather. This position is considered weather essential personnel.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

• Picks up plastic bags and debris from curb and places them in rear of truck.
• Directs driver in backing and unloading of trucks on route and transfer station.
• Assists in loading brush truck, either by stacking brush and debris in truck or operating of chipper.
• Helps in cleaning of truck – interior and exterior.
• Helps in cleanup and maintenance operations at the transfer station, paint shop and landfill.
• Performs dumpster repairs, painting, fence repairs, landfill litter control and miscellaneous duties as required.
• Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
• Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
• Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers.
• Ability to use and/or operate, and/or learn to use and operate a chipper, rear loader, backhoe, tractors, pickup, recycling truck and trailers.
• Ability to use a pitchfork, shovel, rake, metal shear, airless paint sprayer, grinder and other small hand tools.

Licenses/Certification

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Any combination of experience and training equivalent to completion of Eighth Grade.

A valid Texas Driver’s License.

Preferred Qualifications

General maintenance and repairs, painting and clean up experience is preferred.

Physical Demands

The employee is also required to balance, crouch, feel, finger, handle, pull, push, reach, speak, stand, stoop, talk, see, and walk. Also requires the ability to make rational decisions and preform repetitive motions
