Job summary

American Water is seeking a Utility Worker to join our Hopewell, VA team. You will inspect, maintain, and replace control devices, such as gate valves and hydrants, and perform various tasks at the water treatment plant and facilities.

You will monitor pumps, valves, and flow meters, ensure regulatory compliance, and assist with routine repairs. The role supports safe, reliable drinking water and involves on-site work in Hopewell with opportunities for growth.

Qualifications

  • Experience operating electric motors, pumps, and valves to regulate pump stations.
  • Ability to monitor water production facilities and distribution systems and adjust operations to stay compliant.
  • Experience with water quality sampling, testing, and compliance with standards.
  • Ability to read flow meters and gauges and adjust equipment accordingly.

Responsibilities

  • Operates, maintains, and controls electric motors, pumps, and valves to regulate operation of pump stations.
  • Monitors the water production facilities and distribution/collection system and make adjustments as necessary to control their operation and maintain compliance with regulations.
  • Performs water quality sampling, testing and analysis to determine compliance with federal, state and VAWC’s standards.
  • Reads and adjust flow-meters and gauges to regulate equipment according to water consumption and demand.
  • Repairs and lubricates machines and equipment, using hand tools and power tools.
  • Maintains facility buildings and grounds and handles routine maintenance and emergency actions as needed.

Primary Role

American Water is currently seeking a Utility Worker to join our Hopewell , VA team. As a utility worker you will inspect, maintain, and replace control devices, such as gate valves and hydrants on water mains throughout the distribution system as well as pe rform a variety of tasks associated with the operation and maintenance of the water treatment plant, facilities, grounds, and equipment.

Key Accountabilities
  • Operates, maintains, and controls electric motors, pumps, and valves to regulate operation of pump stations
  • Monitors the water production facilities and distribution/collection system and make adjustments as necessary to control their operation and maintain compliance with regulations
  • Performs water quality sampling, testing and analysis to determine compliance with federal, state and VAWC’s standards
  • Feeds specified amounts of chemicals, such as chlorine, ammonia, potassium permanganate and corrosion inhibitor into water supply and/or adjust automatic devices that admit specified amounts of chemicals into water to disinfect and otherwise treat water
  • Documents chemical feed activities and system performance with written reports and automatic charts. Records data, such as residual content of chemicals, water pressure, power consumption, water output, and chemical consumption
  • Monitors panel board(s) and adjust controls to regulate flow rates and water storage and distribution of water
  • Repairs and lubricates machines and equipment, using hand tools and power tools
  • Maintains pipe systems, and related hydraulic and pneumatic equipment, electrical conduit and repairs and replaces gauges, valves, pressure regulators, and related equipment
  • Turns valves, pulls levers, and flips switches to operate and control motor driven pumps
  • Reads and adjust flow-meters and gauges to regulate equipment according to water consumption and demand. Inspects equipment to detect malfunctions, such as pump leaks or worn bearing
  • Maintains facility buildings and grounds at appropriate appearance standards to include general housekeeping such as sweeping, dusting, mopping, etc. Cleans basins. Digs ditches either by hand or using small backhoe. Operates electric hoist. Determines action to be taken in the event of an emergency, such as, but not limited to, machine, equipment, or power failure. Operates company vehicles and forklift as required
  • Ohter duties as assigned
Travel Requirements
  • Reports to Hopewell or Waverly each morning or alternate location as directed by supervisor
