Job summary

Joint Municipal Water and Sewer Commission in Lexington, SC, is seeking a dedicated Utility Technician II to perform semiskilled water/wastewater line work, meter maintenance, and related duties.

The role requires safety discipline, ability to work in varied conditions, and readiness to handle emergency situations. The position involves operating light to medium equipment and may involve overtime or on-call shifts.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED is required.
  • Possession of a valid South Carolina driver’s license.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures and ability to respond to emergencies.
  • Knowledge of maintenance, repair, and manual tasks for utility lines.
  • Ability to read and write; able to perform manual labor.
  • Utility Technician II requires non-licensed water/wastewater experience or heavy equipment experience.

Responsibilities

  • Install, repair and maintain water/sewer lines, meters and related facilities; make line taps.
  • Perform water and sewer line maintenance, repair, installation, and replacement tasks.
  • Raise/lower manholes, taps on high-pressure lines; connect pipes to mains and service connections.
  • Respond to sewer and water line problems; diagnose issues with meters.
  • Operate equipment such as tap machines, pumps, trucks, jackhammers.
  • Work overtime and/or be on call; maintain clean job sites.
  • Lead small crews as Utility Technician II and assist with program administration.

Job description

Position Hours

8:00 am to 5:30 pm, Monday through Thursday and 8:00 am to 12:00 pm on Friday

Minimum Job Duties

Performs responsible semiskilled work in a variety of utility line construction, repair and maintenance assignments of a water/wastewater system involving the use of common tools and frequently operates equipment in connection with the semiskilled tasks to which assigned.

  • Installing, repairing and maintaining water/sewer lines, meters and related facilities; making line taps.
  • Performs water and sewer line maintenance, repair, installation and replacement tasks.
  • Installs, replaces and repairs water and sewer lines, taps, hydrants, valves and meters.
  • Raises and lowers manholes and valve boxes; taps high-pressure lines.
  • Connects water and sewer pipes to mains and service connections.
  • Helps determine cause of leaking water meters.
  • Repairs water meters; installs water meters; repairs leaking water and sewer lines.
  • Cleans up work site after job has been completed.
  • Changes out water meters; makes taps on lines.
  • Responds to sewer and water line problems.
  • Prepares and maintains equipment and vehicles.
  • Operates tap machine, dewatering pump, dump truck, utility truck, boring machine, jackhammer and related light and medium equipment.
  • Is required to work overtime and/or be on call.
  • Performs related tasks, as required.
Additional Responsibilites and Duties for Utiltiy Technician II:
  • Acts as a lead worker on a small crew of semi-skilled workers
  • Implements/administers special programs as assigned which relate to the operational activities of the utility system (e.g. safety program coordinator, lead/copper rule compliance, etc.)
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Possession of an appropriate drivers’ license valid in the State of South Carolina
  • Must have knowledge and understanding of appropriate safety procedures and be able to respond in emergency situations
  • Knowledge of the maintenance, repair and manual tasks of the area to which assigned
  • Knowledge of the safe use and operation and preventive maintenance of the common hand and power tools required in the work
  • Knowledge of the safe use, operation and preventive maintenance of the equipment to which assigned
  • Skill in the use of the equipment to which assigned
  • Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions
  • Ability to read and write
  • Utility Technician I: Some experience as a worker in the field of maintenance, repair and/or construction of utility lines
  • Utility Technician II:Non-Licensed experience in the water/wastewater field or experience in heavy equipment operation, to include excavators
Beneficial Skills & Experience
  • Any level of licensure in Water Treatment or Water Distribution as issued by the State of SC Environmental Certification Board.
  • Any level of licensure in Wastewater Collection as issued by the WEASC.
