Job summary

Lcjmwsc is seeking a Utility Technician II to perform semiskilled work in water/wastewater system construction, repair and maintenance, using common tools and operating equipment.

The role involves installing and maintaining water and sewer lines, taps, meters, hydrants; reading meters; responding to line problems; overtime and on-call as required.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Valid South Carolina driver's license.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures and ability to respond in emergencies.
  • Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods.
  • Knowledge of maintenance, repair and tasks for utility lines.
  • Familiarity with safe use and preventive maintenance of common tools.
  • Experience as Utility Technician I/II preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performs semiskilled work on water/wastewater systems with common tools and equipment.
  • Install, repair and maintain water/sewer lines, meters and related facilities; make line taps.
  • Respond to sewer and water line problems and perform meters work.
  • Operate light/medium equipment and maintain sites after completion.
  • Lead small crew as Utility Technician II if assigned.

Position Hours

8:00 am to 5:30 pm, Monday through Thursday and 8:00 am to 12:00 pm on Friday

Minimum Job Duties

Performs responsible semiskilled work in a variety of utility line construction, repair and maintenance assignments of a water/wastewater system involving the use of common tools and frequently operates equipment in connection with the semiskilled tasks to which assigned.

  • Installing, repairing and maintaining water/sewer lines, meters and related facilities; making line taps.
  • Performs water and sewer line maintenance, repair, installation and replacement tasks.
  • Installs, replaces and repairs water and sewer lines, taps, hydrants, valves and meters.
  • Raises and lowers manholes and valve boxes; taps high-pressure lines.
  • Connects water and sewer pipes to mains and service connections.
  • Helps determine cause of leaking water meters.
  • Repairs water meters; installs water meters; repairs leaking water and sewer lines.
  • Cleans up work site after job has been completed.
  • Changes out water meters; makes taps on lines.
  • Responds to sewer and water line problems.
  • Prepares and maintains equipment and vehicles.
  • Operates tap machine, dewatering pump, dump truck, utility truck, boring machine, jackhammer and related light and medium equipment.
  • Is required to work overtime and/or be on call.
  • Performs related tasks, as required.
Additional Responsibilites and Duties for Utiltiy Technician II:
  • Acts as a lead worker on a small crew of semi-skilled workers
  • Implements/administers special programs as assigned which relate to the operational activities of the utility system (e.g. safety program coordinator, lead/copper rule compliance, etc.)
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Possession of an appropriate drivers’ license valid in the State of South Carolina
  • Must have knowledge and understanding of appropriate safety procedures and be able to respond in emergency situations
  • Knowledge of the maintenance, repair and manual tasks of the area to which assigned
  • Knowledge of the safe use and operation and preventive maintenance of the common hand and power tools required in the work
  • Knowledge of the safe use, operation and preventive maintenance of the equipment to which assigned
  • Skill in the use of the equipment to which assigned
  • Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions
  • Ability to read and write
  • Utility Technician I: Some experience as a worker in the field of maintenance, repair and/or construction of utility lines
  • Utility Technician II:Non-Licensed experience in the water/wastewater field or experience in heavy equipment operation, to include excavators
Beneficial Skills & Experience
  • Any level of licensure in Water Treatment or Water Distribution as issued by the State of SC Environmental Certification Board.
  • Any level of licensure in Wastewater Collection as issued by the WEASC.
