Job summary

University of Nebraska-Lincoln seeks a Utility Steamfitter/Pipefitter to install, maintain, and repair mechanical piping systems. You will work with high-pressure boilers and chillers, read prints, and follow codes, with 24/7 availability for emergencies.

The role requires 3+ years in a utility or industrial plant, welding expertise (arc, GMAW, TIG, oxy-fuel), blueprints literacy, and safety-awareness. Competitive pay, benefits, and tuition assistance are offered.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent with related training or experience.
• Experience in welding, pipe fitting, and general maintenance.
• 3+ years in a utility/industrial plant with welding and piping work.
• Skilled in arc welding (ASME code), GMAW, TIG, and oxy-fuel processes.
• Able to read blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings.
• Knowledge of safety regulations and codes related to piping systems.

Responsibilities

• Layout, design, installation, assembly, maintenance, testing, and repair of mechanical piping systems.
• Work with high‑pressure boilers and chillers, including hot and chilled water, steam, and related systems.
• Follow local and state codes for piping and fitting tasks.
• Operate welding equipment for Arc, GMAW, TIG, and oxy fuel welding and cutting.
• Read and interpret system prints and schematics accurately.
• Be flexible for 24/7 emergencies, shift coverage, or other operational demands.

As a Utility Steamfitter/Pipefitter, you will

• Responsible for layout, design, installation, assembly, maintenance, testing, and repair of mechanical utility piping systems.


• Work with high-pressure boilers and chillers, encompassing various systems such as hot water, chilled water, steam, and more.


• Follow local and state codes for all piping and fitting tasks.


• Operate welding equipment to perform Arc, GMAW , Tig, and oxy fuel welding and cutting tasks.


• Read and interpret system prints and schematics accurately.


• Flexibility to work beyond normal shifts, 24/7 availability for emergencies, shift coverage, or other operational demands, sometimes on short notice.

Minimum Required Qualifications

• Relevant coursework, or specialized training beyond high school; equivalent experience considered.


• Experience/training in welding, pipe fitting, general maintenance.


• 3+ years of related work experience in a utility or industrial plant with welding, steam/pipe fitting, and general maintenance.


• Skilled in various types of welding, such as arc welding ( ASME code), wire feed ( GMAW ), Tig ( GTAW ), and oxy-fuel processes.


• Skilled in hand and power tool operation.


• Knowledge of local, state, and federal codes related to piping systems and safety regulations.


• Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings.


• Understanding of the properties of various gases, chemicals, and fuels used in industrial and commercial facilities.


• Good communication skills for coordinating with team members and responding to work-related communications.

Preferred Qualifications

• Associate’s or equivalent education/experience in welding or pipefitting preferred.


• Utility plant experience.


• Experience with high pressure boilers and chillers.


• Will be required to obtain an EPA608 Universal Refrigerant license within 1-year of employment start date.


• Must have a valid driver’s license and meet University driver eligibility requirement.


• 6G All Position Stick Welding on Pipe certification.
