About the Opportunity
Our client is a growing engineering and project delivery organization specializing in renewable energy infrastructure across North America. The team supports utility-scale solar, battery energy storage systems (BESS), hybrid power plants, microgrids, and other clean energy projects for developers, utilities, and commercial clients.
They are seeking an experienced Lead Utility Engineer to provide technical leadership on large-scale renewable energy projects. This individual will oversee engineering execution, coordinate multidisciplinary design efforts, and serve as a primary technical resource throughout project development, detailed design, construction support, and commissioning.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead engineering delivery for utility-scale solar, energy storage, and hybrid generation projects.
- Establish project design criteria, technical standards, and engineering best practices.
- Manage interfaces between electrical, civil, structural, substation, transmission, controls, and telecommunications disciplines.
- Coordinate external engineering consultants and specialty subcontractors.
- Review and approve design packages, calculations, specifications, and construction deliverables.
- Support equipment evaluation, technical due diligence, procurement activities, and vendor management.
- Lead design reviews, constructability assessments, RFI responses, and quality control efforts.
- Provide technical input for proposals, project pursuits, budgets, schedules, and staffing plans.
- Support commissioning activities and project closeout documentation.
- Mentor engineers and promote continuous improvement across the engineering function.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- Licensed Professional Engineer (PE), or ability to secure additional state licenses as required.
- 10+ years of engineering experience supporting utility-scale power generation projects.
- Demonstrated leadership of multiple large-scale solar and/or BESS projects exceeding 100 MW.
- Strong understanding of utility-scale electrical systems, including:
- DC and AC plant design
- Medium-voltage collection systems
- Inverters and power conversion equipment
- Grounding, auxiliary power, and cable systems
- Experience coordinating interdisciplinary engineering teams and external partners.
- Familiarity with power system studies, including load flow, short-circuit, grounding, protection coordination, arc flash, and dynamic system assessments.
- Experience advancing projects through major design milestones and construction execution.
- Strong verbal communication, technical writing, organizational, and leadership skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Background in both utility-scale solar and energy storage projects.
- Experience working within EPC, developer, owner's engineer, or engineering consulting environments.
- Familiarity with industry software such as AutoCAD, PVsyst, PVcase, ETAP, SKM, PSCAD, PSSE, PSLF, or PowerWorld.
- Knowledge of North American interconnection requirements, utility standards, and applicable IEEE, NEC, NESC, and NFPA codes.
- Additional credentials such as NABCEP certification and OSHA training are advantageous.
Travel
This position includes regular travel for project meetings, site visits, factory inspections, construction support, and commissioning activities. Candidates should be comfortable with periodic domestic travel, with occasional international travel possible depending on project needs.
