JOB OVERVIEW: NON UNION VEGETATION CONTROL TECHNICIAN

The Non-Union Vegetation Control (VC) Technician plays a critical role in supporting ArborWorks' vegetation management operations by maintaining safe and reliable access to utility infrastructure. This position performs vegetation control activities around utility assets, helping reduce service interruptions, mitigate safety risks, and ensure compliance with utility and environmental standards.

Working closely with field crews, supervisors, property owners, and utility partners, the VC Technician supports operational success through safe work practices, accurate documentation, effective communication, and high-quality vegetation management services. This role is ideal for individuals who thrive in an outdoor environment, enjoy hands-on work, and are committed to safety, teamwork, and operational excellence.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Vegetation Management Operations

  • Perform vegetation control activities around utility poles, rights-of-way, and utility access areas using approved industry practices.
  • Trim, cut, clear, and remove brush, trees, and other vegetation utilizing hand tools, power tools, and mechanized equipment as authorized.
  • Operate chainsaws, weed eaters, brush trimmers, pruners, handsaws, pole saws, and other vegetation management equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Complete assigned work orders accurately and efficiently within established production and quality standards.
  • Identify and report potential hazards, damaged equipment, or unsafe site conditions.

Equipment & Vehicle Operations

  • Conduct daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections of vehicles, trailers, tools, and equipment.
  • Maintain equipment in safe operating condition and report maintenance needs promptly.
  • Safely operate company vehicles in accordance with company policies and driver qualification requirements.
  • Ensure proper care, storage, and transportation of tools, equipment, and materials .

Documentation & Technology

  • Utilize company-provided digital platforms and applications to review work assignments, update job statuses, and document completed work.
  • Complete required reports, forms, inspection records, and production documentation accurately and on time.
  • Maintain accurate records of vegetation management activities and field observations.

Safety & Compliance

  • Adhere to all ArborWorks safety policies, procedures, and operational standards.
  • Participate in daily safety briefings, job hazard assessments, and required safety meetings.
  • Ensure compliance with utility, environmental, and regulatory requirements while performing vegetation management activities.
  • Wear and maintain required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times .
  • Immediately report incidents, near misses, and safety concerns.
  • Communicate professionally and respectfully with residents, property owners, utility representatives, and team members.
  • Provide information regarding work activities, site conditions, and project status when appropriate.
  • Collaborate with crew members and supervisors to ensure efficient completion of assigned work.
  • Promote a positive customer experience while performing work on public and private property.

REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Relevant vocational or technical training is beneficial.

Experience

  • Minimum six (6) months of experience in vegetation management, landscaping, tree care, grounds maintenance, utility operations, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience operating vegetation management equipment and hand tools is preferred.
  • Previous customer-facing experience is preferred.

  • Ability to safely perform physically demanding outdoor work for extended periods.
  • Ability to follow work instructions, maps, work orders, and operating procedures.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.

Licenses / Certifications

  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record meeting company standards.
  • CPR Certification (required upon hire or within designated timeframe).
  • Herbicide Applicator License (required upon hire or within 90 days of hire where applicable).

Required Training

  • Annual Driver Training.
  • LCCP Test Completion.
  • Company Safety Orientation and Required Safety Training.
  • Equipment Operation and Hazard Recognition Training.
  • Herbicide Application Training, if applicable.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Previous utility vegetation management experience.
  • Experience working around utility infrastructure and rights-of-way.
  • Current CPR Certification.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
  • Experience using mobile workforce management or digital work order systems.
  • Knowledge of vegetation identification, pruning standards, and integrated vegetation management practices.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Primarily field-based position requiring work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, wind, and uneven terrain.
  • Frequent exposure to vegetation, dust, insects, noise, and environmental elements.
  • Requires extensive walking, standing, climbing, bending, kneeling, reaching, and lifting throughout the workday.
  • Regular use of hand tools, power tools, chainsaws, and vegetation management equipment.
  • May require lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds or more with assistance.
  • Fast-paced operational environment with production goals, changing priorities, and strict safety requirements.
  • Travel requirement: Up to 100% travel, including overnight stays as business needs dictate.
  • Eligible for $100 daily per diem when assigned to qualifying travel projects.
  • Overtime, extended hours, weekend work, and emergency response support may be required based on operational demands.
