Job summary

AEP in Longview, TX is seeking a Sr Utility Mechanic to perform shop maintenance, repair and fabrication of tools and equipment in support of energy delivery activities. You will diagnose and fix issues, fabricate components, and conduct field and shop tasks across various tools and equipment.

The role requires knowledge of shop practices, reading prints, and maintaining safety standards. A Class A CDL is required; the position offers competitive compensation and a comprehensive benefits package.

Qualifications

  • Education requirements: High school graduate or equivalent education and/or experience.
  • Work Experience requirement: Minimum of one year satisfactory work experience as a Utility Mechanic or the equivalent.
  • Required Licenses: Valid state driver’s license; Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License; must meet vehicle operation requirements per federal/state law.
  • Other Requirements: Reads and interprets prints; knowledge of shop maintenance, materials, equipment and tools; safety regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose trouble and perform shop maintenance and repair hand tools, power tools, hydraulic tools, and other associated equipment.
  • Diagnose failures or malfunctions of tools and equipment, report to proper parties, and perform corrective action.
  • Fabricate, assemble, maintain and repair tools and equipment.
  • Perform dielectric tests on hot sticks.
  • Fabricate and test grounds.
  • Research tool needs and order tools from outside vendors and AEP Supply Chain.
  • Operate infrared camera and other specialized equipment as needed.
  • Perform work in the field as assigned.
  • Perform miscellaneous facility maintenance duties as assigned.
  • Handle and dispose of waste material, oil leaks, solvents and cleaners using required safety procedures and in accordance with environmental regulations.
  • Use hand, pneumatic and power tools.
  • Operate automotive equipment and its associated equipment and perform duties incidental to the operation of such equipment.
  • Perform duties in accordance with the Company's safety rules, regulations and practices and report unsafe conditions and practices.
  • Maintain tools, equipment and work areas in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Maintain records and submit reports as required.
  • Attend and participate in training as assigned and assist in the training of other employees.
  • Attend and participate in safety meetings and other safety related activities.
  • Direct the work of employees assigned to assist.
  • Report irregularities and abnormal conditions.
  • Assist employees of equal or higher classification.
  • Perform similar or less skilled work.

Transportation and Operation of Heavy Machinery
What We’re Looking For:
  • Education requirements: High school graduate or equivalent education and/or experience.
  • Work Experience requirement: Minimum of one year satisfactory work experience as a Utility Mechanic or the equivalent.
  • Required License(s)/Certification(s): Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license; Must possess and maintain a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License; Must meet all vehicle operation requirements as designated by federal and/or state law 9.
Other Requirements:
  • High school graduate or equivalent education and/or experience.
  • Minimum of two years satisfactory work experience as a Mechanic.
  • Must have performed all the duties of and have all the qualifications of a Utility Mechanic or the equivalent and must qualify through demonstration, examination and/or performance appraisal as determined by the Company.
  • Must have a good working knowledge of shop maintenance, materials, practices, equipment and tools used.
  • Must be able to read, interpret and work from prints, specifications, drawings and diagrams.
  • Must have demonstrated proficiency with PC applications.
  • Must have a good working knowledge of the principles of electricity and the operation and function of shop equipment.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License.
  • Must meet all vehicle operation requirements as designated by federal and/or state law 9.

  • Compensation Grade: U074-R23
  • Compensation Range: $39.30 - $42.88
Physical Demand Level

H – Heavy Work: Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10-20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Medium Work.
