The City of Riverside, Public Utilities Department (RPU) is accepting applications for the position of Utilities Water Maintenance Mechanic to fill one vacancy in the Water Division. Under general supervision, you will install, maintain, and repair drinking and irrigation water production, distribution and treatment facilities mechanical and electro-mechanical equipment.

The role includes reading plans, leading semi-skilled staff, and coordinating maintenance work to ensure reliable water

Qualifications

  • Equivalent to high school diploma.
  • Three years of experience with heavy mechanical equipment installation, repair and maintenance.
  • Ability to obtain California class C driver license.
  • Must obtain DHS Grade 2 Water Distribution certificate or higher within 18 months.

Responsibilities

  • Install, replace, repair and adjust pumps, valves, pipes, flow meters, chlorinators, pumps and related equipment in water facilities.
  • Operate lathe, milling machine and other tools in repair of large pumps and motors.
  • Replace packing and bearings in pumps, valves and motors.
  • Maintain and repair piping systems and related plumbing tasks.
  • Lubricate equipment and check for malfunctions.
  • Weld using gas or arc welding equipment.
  • Install pumps, variable speed drives, motors and telemetry equipment.
  • Perform general building maintenance, painting and related work.

Job description

The City of Riverside, Public Utilities Department (RPU) is accepting applications for the position of UTILITIES WATER MAINTENANCE MECHANIC to fill one (1) vacancy in the Water Division. The eligibility list established may be used to fill the current and/or upcoming vacancies within this classification for up to six (6) months.

Under general supervision, to perform skilled work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of drinking and irrigation water production, distribution and treatment facilities mechanical and electro-mechanical machinery and equipment; and to do related work as required.

Typical Duties
  • Install, replace, repair and adjust pumps, valves, pipes, flow meters, chlorinators, pumping equipment, pressure gauges and other appurtenant equipment of water production, distribution and treatment facilities.
  • Operate lathe, milling machine and other machine tools in repair of large pumps, variable speed drives, motors, chain drives, sewerage lift station and related equipment.
  • Replace packing in pumps and valves and bearings in motors, pumps, natural gas engines and other equipment.
  • Maintain and repair piping systems and to do related plumbing and pipefitting tasks.
  • Lubricate equipment and check for malfunctions.
  • Use gas and/or arc welding equipment to heat, cut, braze, and weld.
  • Install pumps, variable speed drives and motors, timing devices and assist in installing telemetering electrical equipment.
  • Perform general building maintenance and repair, including rough carpentry, pouring and finishing concrete, painting and related work.
  • Use of a variety of hand and power hand tools, and may operate overhead traveling and truck cranes.
  • Read plans and drawings pertaining to the water production, distribution and treatment facilities.
  • May act as lead worker directing semi-skilled and unskilled employees on construction and maintenance work.
  • Participate in related divisional cross-training efforts.
  • Operate, keep clean and perform minor maintenance to assigned City vehicle.
Education

Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.

Experience

Three years of experience in the installation, repair, and maintenance of heavy mechanical equipment such as pumps, motors, vari-speed and chain drives, lift stations and all other related equipment.

Necessary Special Requirement
  1. Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid class “C” California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.
  2. May require possession of or the ability to obtain an appropriate valid California Commercial Motor Vehicle Operator’s License based upon operational need and the duties assigned.
  3. Possession of a Grade 2 Water Distribution Operator certificate issued by the California Department of Health Services (DHS). Must be able to obtain full certification requirements within eighteen (18) months of employment.
Highly Desired Qualifications
  • Possession of a Class A Commercial Driver's License
  • Experience of pump and motor alignments
  • Experience performing vibration analysis on pumps and motors
  • Experience working with diaphragm chlorine pumps
