Job summary

Charlotte County Utilities is seeking a hands-on Treatment Technician to inspect, operate and maintain water and wastewater treatment facilities and pump stations. You will perform preventive maintenance, monitor equipment and logs, and respond to issues with sound judgment while prioritizing safety.

The role requires a high school diploma or equivalent and 2 years in public works/utility maintenance, plus licenses and certifications within set timeframes.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent and 2 years of public works/utility maintenance experience.
• Valid Commercial Driver’s License Class A or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
• Within 1 year: CCU Confined Space Entry Certification; within 2 years: Water Distribution Operator Level 3 License.

Responsibilities

• Inspect, operate, troubleshoot, maintain, install, and repair treatment equipment at water and wastewater facilities and pump stations.
• Perform daily inspections and preventive maintenance with accurate logs and reports.
• Monitor flow, pressure, levels, sensing and trending equipment; adjust/repair as needed.
• Identify unusual conditions and take appropriate corrective actions; report concerns.
• Maintain electrical equipment in and around treatment facilities and pump stations.
• Perform mechanical adjustments to valves and equipment; respond to issues identified by the Chief Plant Operator.
• Keep work areas and maintenance vehicles clean, organized and safe.
• Participate in emergency response and on-call programs to ensure essential services.
• Follow safety practices and properly use PPE including respiratory protection.

What You’ll Do

• Inspect, operate, troubleshoot, maintain, install, and repair process equipment at water and wastewater treatment facilities and integral pump stations.
• Perform daily inspections and preventive maintenance, while maintaining accurate records, logs, and routine reports.
• Monitor flow, pressure, levels, sensing and trending equipment, evaluate operating conditions, and make routine adjustments, repairs, or replacements as needed.
• Use sound judgment to identify unusual conditions, take appropriate corrective action, and report concerns and corrections.
• Monitor and maintain electrical equipment in and around treatment facilities and pump stations.
• Perform mechanical adjustments to valves and equipment and respond to mechanical concerns identified by the Chief Plant Operator.
• Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas and maintenance vehicles.
• Participate in emergency response and scheduled on-call programs to help keep essential services operating when our community needs them most.
• Follow established safety practices, including the proper use of respiratory protection and other required PPE.
• Provide exceptional customer assistance, using effective communication, problem-solving, and complaint resolution.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of departmental policies, plans, and procedures.
• Knowledge of modern office practices, plans, and procedures.

• Ability to use sound judgment in detecting unusual conditions, or recommending repair scheduling.
• Ability to interpret drawings, schematics, and blueprints in performance of job duties.
• Ability to respond in a professional manner to complaints or inquiries from a variety of sources.
• Ability to exercise judgment and discretion in interpreting and enforcing department codes, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
• Ability to ascertain priorities and meet deadlines and objectives under general supervision.

Education and Experience

An equivalent combination of relevant training, education and experience:

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Two (2) years of experience in public works construction, maintenance, wastewater collection, water distribution, repair activities.

Licenses and/or Certificates

• Must maintain a valid Commercial Driver’s license Class "A" or ability to acquire permit within 30 days of hire and ability to acquire license within three (3) months of hire.
• Within one (1) year of position assignment:
• Must maintain CCU Confined Space Entry Certification
• Within two (2) years of position assignment:
• Must maintain Water Distribution Operator Level 3 License

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Stooping, crouching, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, hearing, seeing up close, seeing far away, kneeling, reaching, pushing, talking, standing, finger movement, repetitive motions, depth perception. Frequent lifting of up to 25 pounds; occasional lifting up to 50 lbs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is exposed to outdoor weather conditions or irate customers, extreme noise, odors, heights, and/or dust.
