Job summary

The City of Ormond Beach is seeking a Maintenance Worker for wastewater collection and reuse systems. The role involves performing semi-skilled tasks across gravity, force main, low-pressure force main, and reclaimed water distribution, under supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in transporting materials to job sites.

  • Assist with pressure testing, line cleaning, and root control.
  • Maintain vehicles and tools and keep parts stocked.

  • Participate in on-call and after-hours duties; overtime possible.

Job description

Summary:

Performs semi-skilled tasks related to wastewater collection/reuse distribution systems operations to include construction, maintenance and repair activities. This position performs tasks in conventional gravity systems, force main systems, low pressure force main systems, and reclaimed water distribution systems as assigned and under direction of System Maintenance Supervisor or Lead Utilities Technician. This position requires availability to work rotating on-call shifts.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assists in transport of materials to the job site.

  • Operates pumps, saws, hand tools, and other related mechanical and hand equipment for excavation, pipe fitting, and surface restoration activities.

  • Operates specialized equipment, including sewer jet cleaners, sewer camera equipment, and assists on operating combination sewer cleaners, small excavators and backhoes.

  • Performs installation of new and repair of existing piping, fittings, valves, meters, pretreatment effluent pumping (PEP) systems, and other miscellaneous collection and reuse system components in accordance with accepted standards and regulatory requirements. Use various tools to clear blocked sewer lines.

  • Ability to locate and open manholes, pep tanks, and sewer clean outs using drawings and hand tools.

  • Assists in pressure testing, pigging, line cleaning, root control, flushing, and overall collections/ reuse system maintenance.

  • Performs cleaning, tool upkeep, and limited preventative maintenance activities for vehicles and other related equipment. Keep vehicles stocked with commonly used parts to perform daily tasks.

  • May perform minor electric work as needed.

  • Participates in on-call and after-hours duties as assigned. Must be available for overtime and emergency call-outs when necessary.

  • Assists in preparation for, response to, and recovery from, the impacts of a wide variety of disasters or emergency situations and may be temporarily assigned to other duties, locations, and shifts.

  • Meets attendance requirements.

  • Promotes positive customer service environment internally and externally.

  • Performs other job-related functions as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • None.

Education and/or Experience:

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent recognized certificate. Additional or supplemental experience with various hand tools and machinery is recommended. Working knowledge of piping or mechanical systems is also recommended but not required.

  • Must have valid Florida Driver’s License and be able to obtain, within six months of employment, a valid Florida Commercial Driver’s License Class B with appropriate endorsements.

  • Ability to maintain records, files, and reports in accordance with established methods and procedures.

  • The noise level in the work environment is moderate to high.
  • The temperature level in the typical work environment is moderate to high, usually ranging between 60 to 90 degrees F seasonally dependent. During winter months the temperature in the morning and evening hours can occasionally be below freezing or 32 degrees F for short duration periods.
  • Several wastewater system components are included in the work environment. Several chemical feed systems make up a portion of the system environment and Safety Data Sheets (SDS) are available for review to insure employee is familiar with appropriate safe handling procedures associated with each chemical of interest.
  • Additional adverse conditions are present in work environment typical to those associated with sanitary sewer systems to include solid, liquid and gaseous forms of domestic and industrial waste streams having periodic septic characteristics.
  • Several tasks involve system related work to be performed in excavated work areas near high traffic roadways. Properly administered work excavation and traffic control standards are necessary for safe performance of work.
