Job summary

Richland County is seeking a capable worker to install, test, inspect, locate, troubleshoot, evaluate, monitor, maintain and repair all components of the County’s water distribution and wastewater system. You’ll prepare work records, assist with projects, and perform general maintenance.

Heavy equipment operation is required; on-call work, nights, weekends, and holidays may be needed. Safety rules apply, with essential status in inclement weather or emergencies.

Qualifications

  • Requires high school diploma, GED or equivalent. Specialized vocational training or technical diploma is desirable.
  • Must possess a valid state driver’s license. Possession of South Carolina Commercial Driver’s license is preferred.
  • Must obtain "B" Commercial Driver’s License within 18 months.
  • Must obtain Class "D" Water Distribution and/or "D" Wastewater Collections within 12 months of hire.
  • May require pursuing higher certifications/licenses.

Responsibilities

  • Operate heavy equipment including loaders, mowers, trucks and cranes.
  • Works outside of regular work schedule to include on-call, holidays, nights, and weekends when needed.
  • Respond and follow through with work order requests.
  • Attends meetings, training, etc., as appropriate to enhance job knowledge and skills.
  • Considered essential employee in inclement weather or emergency conditions.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Operates heavy equipment including loaders, mowers, trucks and cranes.

Works outside of regular work schedule to include on-call, holidays, nights, and weekends when needed. Respond and follow through with work order request. Performs all duties in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, regulations, and standards of quality and safety. Attends meetings, training, etc., as appropriate to enhance job knowledge and skills. Considered essential employee in the event of inclement weather or emergency conditions. All other duties as assigned.

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL PREPARATION:

Requires high school diploma, GED or equivalent. Specialized vocational training or technical diploma is desirable.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:

Must possess a valid state driver’s license. Possession of South Carolina Commercial Driver’s license is preferred. Must obtain "B" Commercial Driver’s License within 18 months. PHYSICAL AND DEXTERITY REQUIREMENTS:

Requires heavy work that involves walking, standing, climbing, balancing, stooping, crouching, shoveling, crawling, reaching, and constantly lifting, pushing or raising objects, exerting between 35 to 50 pounds of force on a recurring basis and 100 pounds of force on a frequent basis.

ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS:

This position is a safety sensitive position. The job may risk exposure to bright/dim light, dusts and pollen, extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, extreme noise levels, vibration, fumes and/or noxious odors, traffic, moving machinery, electrical shock, heights, toxic/caustic chemicals, confined spaces, animals/wildlife, disease/pathogens, poisonous plants, trees, shrubs, difficult terrain, pressurized system. May require to wear respirators in needed areas.

INVOLVEMENT WITH THINGS:

Requires operating and/or repairing complex machinery or equipment that requires extended training and experience, such as public utility equipment and systems, heavy equipment and vehicles; may involve installation and testing. Involves operations of limited scope.

MATHEMATICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Requires using basic mathematics, geometry, and algebra involving variables and formulas plane and solid figures, circumferences, areas and volumes. Must be able to use a calculator to determine changes in pump run times, tank changes, etc.

Compensation Minimum: $19.68
