Job summary

Augusta Canal National Heritage Area is seeking a 100-ton U.S. Coast Guard licensed Master Captain to serve as a Boat Captain for Petersburg Boat tours at the Discovery Center and heritage grounds.

The role is part-time (non-exempt) with an estimated 10–20 hours per week and a pay rate of $25.00 per hour. Typical duties include piloting boats, safety briefings, and coordinating crew and schedule with senior staff.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree is preferred but not mandatory.
• Current U.S. Coast Guard Master Captain license or eligibility/willingness to obtain.
• CPR and First Aid certifications required or obtainable before hire.
• Enrollment in Augusta Canal Authority Drug Consortium program.

Responsibilities

• Pilot the Petersburg Boat for tours and events.
• Manage safe boarding/unboarding of passengers at the dock.
• Maintain Vessel, docks, and walkways in clean, presentable condition.
• Communicate with Discovery Center staff before departure and on arrival.
• Coordinate with Lead Captain to ensure coverage on all operational days.
• Assist in training new captains and tour guides on procedures and safety policies.
• Conduct and log regular safety drills with crew.
