Job summary

Uncommon Schools in New York is seeking an English as a New Language (ENL) Teacher dedicated to helping English Language Learners access grade-level curricula and succeed academically.

The ENL teacher will implement ENL instruction, collaborate with general and special education staff, participate in IEPs, and track student progress while supporting diverse learners in an urban public charter setting. Competitive pay and comprehensive benefits are offered.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree is required; Master’s degree is preferred.
  • NY State ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) or Bilingual Certification preferred but not required

  • Proven track-record of high achievement in the classroom
  • Minimum of two years teaching experience in an urban public school or charter school setting preferred
  • Cumulative GPA 2.75 or higher by the time employment begins

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate (using diagnostic and state mandated assessments) progress of individual English language learners and set goals.
  • Provide direct ENL instruction to small groups or inclusion support for ELLs in ELA classes.
  • Work with ELL students to access general education curriculum and use technology-enhanced learning tools.
  • Attend and participate in IEP meetings and complete case management responsibilities.
  • Advise teachers on modifying curriculum for ELL students and share best practices.
  • Keep updated and accurate records of ELL identification and performance data.
  • Implement curricula and activities to meet our high academic standards.
  • Analyze assessments to measure progress and inform differentiated instruction.
  • Focus on student learning and critical thinking to address needs.
  • Create a positive, structured learning environment with high expectations and conduct.
  • Communicate effectively with students, families, and colleagues.
  • Commit to ongoing professional growth and annual staff orientation/training.
  • Participate in grade-level and school-wide activities.
