Sonoma State University is seeking an Upward Bound Summer Academy Instructor (Casual Worker) to teach two courses to high school students as part of the Six-week Summer/STEM Academy program. Classes run about 90 minutes, with up to two per day, under the TRiO Sonoma-Napa Programs director.

Responsibilities include developing and implementing lessons aligned with state standards, using student-centered instruction, and supporting diverse, low-income, first-generation students.

Job Summary

Reporting to the Johnny Belmontez, Director, TRiO Sonoma-Napa Programs, the Upward Bound Summer Academy Instructor teaches two courses to high school students in one or more of the following subjects: English composition/literature, laboratory science, math (through calculus) including statistics, computer programming, foreign language, and/or SAT/ACT Preparation. The incumbent develops and implements class lessons for the Six-week Summer/STEM Academy program for Upward Bound high school students. Class periods will run approximately 90 minutes each, with up to two classes available per day.

Key Qualifications

A minimum of a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution is required, BA/S with teaching credential preferred. Expertise in at least one academic content area; one-year experience teaching middle, high school, or college students; and the ability to develop and implement curriculum in accordance with state standards are required. Computer literacy required. Proven success in overcoming obstacles similar to those of target population desired. Experience with TRIO programs preferred. The successful incumbent should demonstrate knowledge of student-centered instructional methodologies; sensitivity to the needs and characteristics of low-income and potential first-generation college students; ability to facilitate academic and motivational development for those students; and the ability to relate well to multi-cultural students and staff. In addition, the incumbent must have the ability to effectively communicate with all levels within the university and establish and maintain productive and effective, inclusive working relationships amongst diverse populations including staff, faculty, administration, students, and other internal and external constituents. Must be able to accept constructive feedback and work cooperatively in group situations. Knowledge of general college admissions procedures and university requirements. This position requires the successful completion of a live scan fingerprinting for Sonoma State University, including a live scan fingerprinting at the assigned school site location and TB test.

Salary and Benefits

Starting salary placement depends on qualifications and experience and is anticipated to be in the range of $40 to $45 per hour. This is a part time, temporary, non-exempt position. Reappointment to this position is dependent upon the individual's performance as well as administrative and budgetary considerations. The university reserves the right to terminate this appointment earlier than the scheduled expiration date.
