Responsibilities

The Critical Power Group is responsible for maintaining, servicing, and troubleshooting UPS systems, batteries, and other critical infrastructure equipment. Our technicians are factory trained on most major UPS manufacturers of static equipment (e.g., MGE/APC, Liebert, Toshiba/Mitsubishi, and Powerware/Eaton to name a few). Our technicians perform preventive maintenance and equipment testing as well as emergency service calls at high‑profile government, institutional and commercial customer facilities. The Critical Power Group also provides engineering and technical support to customers and other divisions of M.C. Dean, Inc.

  • Perform installation and repair of static switch and PDU systems
  • Conduct inspections and certifications of power electronics and associated controls
  • Perform preventative maintenance services on contracted equipment as scheduled
  • Inspect static switch systems including Initial, In‑Process, Visual, Final Inspections, and Failure Analysis
  • Certify systems and components meet quality standards per applicable codes, specifications, and checklists
  • Review and verify system drawings and specifications for accuracy and completeness
  • Determine and ensure compliance with maintenance and inspection requirements
  • Resolve discrepancies between recorded and actual system components through research or inspection
  • Provide technical assistance and expertise to customers, owners, and engineers
  • Advise site personnel on proper maintenance practices and procedures
  • Review and interpret technical publications related to inspection and maintenance of power electronics
  • Prepare detailed reports of findings and recommend system improvements and quality control measures
  • Provide technical support and training to customers and cross‑train team members as needed
  • Attend product‑specific training as required by the company
Operational Duties
  • Travel daily to various job sites; overnight travel may be required at company expense
  • Work independently with minimal supervision; communicate availability to corporate office and team lead/manager
  • Maintain and safeguard all company‑issued tools, equipment, and proprietary information
  • Use electronic and electrical test equipment, including:
    • Digital Multimeter
    • Micro Ohm‑meter
    • Insulation Test Equipment
    • Battery Test Equipment (Alber/Midtronics)
  • Coordinate and manage on‑site subcontractors as needed
  • Maintain company or personal vehicle in safe, operational condition with required insurance
  • Complete all required documentation accurately and on time (e.g., Field Service Reports, Time Sheets, Expense Reports)
  • Ensure all work meets M.C. Dean quality and safety standards
Availability & Expectations
  • Must be available for emergency calls 24/7 unless on approved PTO or off‑call status
  • Required to begin onboarding within 30 days of hire
  • Must observe all company safety standards and physical demands, including lifting and installing batteries
  • May be required to perform other duties as assigned
Supervisory Controls
  • Reports to Regional Managers and Team Leads
  • Operates with general supervision and is expected to take initiative within established policies and procedures
  • Work is reviewed for policy adherence, soundness of recommendations, and overall task completion
Qualifications
  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in electrical and/or Electronics from an accredited college or university, or equivalent military/field training
  • Minimum of 7+ years of hands‑on experience with:
    • Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems
    • Batteries and battery monitoring systems
    • Electrical test equipment
    • Electrical apparatuses such as switchgear, panels, breakers, disconnects, ATSs, and generators
Technical Skills & Knowledge
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting schematic diagrams
  • Strong working knowledge of:
    • National Electrical Code (NEC)
    • Electrical maintenance practices and procedures
    • Supply chain and quality control procedures
  • Skilled in diagnosing malfunctions and applying appropriate testing and inspection techniques
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and capable of using laptops, software tools, and electronic communication devices
Communication & Professionalism
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in technical environments
Training & Certifications
  • Willingness to complete manufacturer‑specific maintenance training and certifications as required

Abilities
  • The position requires the ability to lift, carry, and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds on a regular basis. Candidates must demonstrate physical strength and stamina to perform various tasks, including but not limited to, loading, and unloading, operating equipment, and assisting in the transportation of various materials. Proper lifting techniques and safety protocols must be followed to ensure personal and team safety.
  • Relocates a 12-foot stepladder without assistance.
  • Works at various heights up to 60 feet and can climb and maintain balance on scaffolds, aerial lifts, catwalks and all types of ladders.
  • Walks, climbs, lifts, squats, crawls, kneels, pushes, pulls and reaches overhead on a routine and repetitive basis.
  • Possess good vision (may be corrected vision), the ability to see in color, and the ability to hear and communicate in English.
  • May use a standard ladder without exceeding the weight limit while carrying tools.
