Job summary

Elkay Interior Systems is seeking an Upholstery Associate I for its Fond du Lac production facility. You will learn and perform upholstery and assembly processes, cutting fabric, preparing foam, and assembling components under supervision.

The Opportunity

As an Upholstery Associate I, you'll be part of the team that transforms raw materials into high-quality, finished products used in commercial interior environments.

Working under the guidance of our Upholstery Supervisor and experienced team members, you'll learn and perform a variety of upholstery and assembly processes, from cutting fabric and preparing foam to assembling finished components.

This is a hands-on opportunity for someone who enjoys working with tools, takes pride in craftsmanship, and wants to develop practical manufacturing skills.

No previous upholstery experience is required. We're looking for individuals who are eager to learn, pay attention to detail, and take pride in producing quality work.

What You’ll Do

Upholstery & Product Assembly

  • Prepare and assemble upholstery components according to customer specifications, production orders, and quality standards.
  • Cut fabric and foam to required measurements and specifications.
  • Use pneumatic staple guns to attach Velcro and fabric coverings to product components.
  • Apply adhesive using handheld glue sprayers to attach foam to wood components.
  • Assemble booth seat bottoms and booth backs with guidance from experienced team members.
  • Complete upholstery components using foam, fabric, Velcro, and other required materials.

Tools & Equipment

  • Learn to safely operate a variety of upholstery and manufacturing tools, including industrial sewing machines, handheld foam saws, pneumatic staplers, industrial scissors, and pneumatic foam presses.
  • Use hand tools such as hammers, staple removers, pliers, rulers, hand drills, utility knives, and sanders.
  • Operate cutting equipment, including steel-cutting band saws used in upholstery processes, as assigned.
  • Follow established safety procedures when operating equipment and handling materials.

Quality & Production Standards

  • Read and follow blueprints, job orders, bills of materials, and work instructions in printed or electronic formats.
  • Measure materials accurately using tape measures and other measuring tools.
  • Label products and components according to production orders and departmental procedures.
  • Inspect completed products to ensure quality, accuracy, and compliance with customer specifications.
  • Properly store finished components on carts or pallets with the appropriate work orders.
  • Complete stock material usage forms and other required production documentation.
  • Accurately record time worked on assigned projects to support production costing.
  • Complete assigned tasks within established production standards while maintaining quality and efficiency.

What You Bring to the Team

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • No previous upholstery or manufacturing experience required.

Technical Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to use a tape measure and apply accurate measurements to assigned tasks.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, customer specifications, shop drawings, safety rules, and operating instructions.
  • Ability to learn the safe and effective use of hand tools, power tools, sewing machines, and upholstery equipment.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, ratios, and percentages.
  • Ability to follow written, verbal, and diagram-based instructions.
  • Ability to complete standard production documentation and accurately record materials and project time.
  • Ability to identify and resolve routine problems using established procedures and guidance.

This is an active, hands-on manufacturing position performed in our Fond du Lac production facility.

Physical Requirements

  • Perform activities that may include sitting, standing, walking, reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling.
  • Regularly lift and/or move materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Occasionally lift and/or move materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Possess the visual abilities necessary to perform assigned duties, including close and distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Safely operate hand tools, power tools, and assigned manufacturing equipment.
  • Frequent exposure to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles.
  • Occasional exposure to wet or humid conditions, outdoor weather conditions, and electrical hazards.
  • Noise levels are generally loud within the manufacturing environment.
  • Required use of personal protective equipment, including safety glasses and steel-toe shoes.
