Job summary

Prisma Health in Laurens County Medical Campus seeks a hybrid Unit Secretary / Patient Care Tech to support one nursing unit. The role combines administrative tasks at the nurse’s station with basic nursing assistant duties as directed by licensed staff, across patient care activities and documentation in the EMR.

The position involves data collection, vital signs, patient transport, bedside care, and collaboration with the nursing team to maintain a safe, clean environment and efficient unit

Qualifications

• Education - Completion of a nursing assistant, patient care tech, medical assistant, EMT, Paramedic, surgical tech, phlebotomy, military medical corpsman or nursing fundamentals course preferred.
• Experience - no experience required.
• Previous experience as nursing assistant, PCT, MA, EMT, Paramedic, Surgical Tech, Phlebotomist, Medical Corpsman or nursing student is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Responds to patient calls via intercom or in person.
• Performs general reception and other duties at the nurse’s station.
• Assists patients, family, visitors and staff in a kind, professional and efficient manner.
• Provides administrative and clerical support as needed for unit but not limited to data entry, meeting minutes, maintaining bulletin boards, and organizing downtime forms.
• Manages ordering, stocking, and inventory of equipment and supplies in collaboration with nurse manager which includes daily monitoring of supplies, ordering office or special supplies, monitoring PAR levels of supplies, and maintaining/organizing unit supply rooms.
• Coordinates the maintenance of a safe, clean, and functional physical environment in accordance with regulatory standards.
• Monitors designated patient safety systems for alerts and immediately notifies the appropriate RN.
• Provides direct patient care within scope of practice as directed by providers and licensed staff in accordance with established policies, procedures, and protocols based on assigned facility or unit.
• Assists patients with activities of daily living including eating, dressing, toileting, bathing and transferring.
• Assists with admission of patients to the unit by preparing room, greeting, and orienting patient and/or family to the unit.
• Assists with walking, turning, positioning and ambulating patient.
• Performs data collection including vital signs, oxygen saturation, temperature, cardiac monitoring, non‑invasive blood pressure monitoring systems, collection of basic/sterile specimens, and documents fluid intake and outtake.
• Performs point of care testing as trained and delegated by RN. Reports lab values to RN.
• Provides patient care based as delegated by the RN on the assigned unit including, but not limited to, sterile and non‑sterile soaks, application of sterile simple dressings and non‑sterile simple dressings, perineal care, basic ostomy care, nasal cannula, phlebotomy, EKG's and incentive spirometry.
• Insertion and removal of straight catheters and removal only of Foley catheters may be performed with appropriate training and clinical competency validation based on assigned unit.
• Assists with fall prevention interventions and patient restraints as delegated.
• Assists the patient care team with transporting patients to diagnostic studies and floor assignments.
• Provides and documents comfort and non‑pharmacological pain management measures.
• Documents data on medical records and informs RN of activities performed, observations of patients and changes in patient status. Charts all observations, clinical data, and procedures performed in EMR.
• Maintains use of appropriate medical equipment and supplies. Returns equipment to other units as needed.
• Cleans and stocks carts, rooms, hallways and kitchens. Changes linens as needed.
• Consults with and keeps supervisor informed of unit activities, needs, and problems related to patient care.
• Knows and follows department, unit, hospital policies, procedures, objectives, quality, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
• Maintains patient rights and confidentiality of patient information.
• Helps to ensure smooth operation of the nursing unit or facility.
• Participates in process improvement initiatives.
• Serves as a role model and participates in educating and mentoring other members of the care team.
• Practices safe, efficient use of supplies.
• Attends department and organization meetings.
• Completes annual compliance training.
• Maintains a clean, safe, therapeutic and caring environment for patients, families, and other staff.

The Unit Secretary / Patient Care Tech position is a hybrid role that primarily acts as a unit secretary and will also perform as needed basic nursing assistant duties and a variety of additional duties based on the assigned nursing unit with appropriate training and clinical competency validation in support and care of patients. Works within scope of practice and under close/general supervision of licensed personnel.
