Job summary

Prisma Health in South Carolina is seeking a dual Unit Secretary and Monitor Tech for the Emergency Department at Oconee Memorial Hospital. The position supports nursing staff, greets patients and families, and handles clerical duties while monitoring telemetry under RN supervision.

Under supervision, you will observe cardiac monitors, document strips, manage transmitter boxes and ensure a safe, clean unit.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent is preferred.
  • No prior healthcare experience required; previous healthcare exposure is a plus.
  • Formal arrhythmia training and Prisma Health arrhythmia exam must be completed within 30 days of hire.
  • Annual arrhythmia competency maintenance if selected for monitor tech responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Greet visitors and respond to patient calls at the nurse's station with courteous, professional service.
  • Provide clerical and administrative support including data entry, minutes, bulletin boards and downtime forms.
  • Order, stock and inventory supplies; maintain unit supply rooms and PAR levels.
  • Monitor patient safety systems and report telemetry changes to the RN per policy.
  • Observe cardiac monitors, document strips and manage transmitter boxes for telemetry units.

Job Summary

This is a dual role that performs the responsibilities of a Unit Secretary and Monitor Tech for the nursing unit.

Under the direction of a Registered Nurse, provides excellent customer service while providing clerical and administrative services. Performs general reception duties at the nurse's station including greeting visitors and responding to patient calls. Monitors, orders and stocks supplies. Maintains a safe work environment for patients, visitors, and staff. Establishes and maintains excellent rapport with Registered Nurses, providers, hospital staff, patients, families, and visitors.

Observes cardiac monitors to identify abnormal heart rhythms under the supervision of a registered nurse.

Essential Functions

  • Unit Secretary
  • Performs general reception and other duties at the nurse’s station. Responds to patient calls via intercom or in person. Assists patients, family, visitors and staff in a kind, professional and efficient manner.
  • Provides administrative and clerical support as needed for unit but not limited to data entry, meeting minutes, maintaining bulletin boards, and organizing downtime forms.
  • Manages ordering, stocking, and inventory of equipment and supplies in collaboration with nurse manager which includes daily monitoring of supplies, ordering office or special supplies, monitoring PAR levels of supplies, and maintaining/organizing unit supply rooms.
  • Coordinates the maintenance of a safe, clean, and functional physical environment in accordance with regulatory standards.
  • Monitors designated patient safety systems for alerts and immediately notifies the appropriate RN.
  • Maintains patient records; ensures that charts are current, complete and thinned as needed according to policies and procedures.

  • Observes cardiac monitors and reports any changes in cardiac rhythm per policy.
  • Receives report from the previous shift and documents strips per policy.
  • Responsible for the management and distribution of transmitter boxes. Ensures transmitter boxes are returned to the surveillance center in a timely manner after discontinuation of telemetry monitoring.
  • Reports problems regarding poor transmission, etc. to the appropriate unit and personnel. Reports telemetry system failures to designated personnel and departments.
  • Completes telemetry summary report per policy guidelines.
  • Triages incoming phone calls, provides appropriate information in a calm and concise manner and logs phone calls.
  • Maintains adequate supplies and keeps the monitoring areas and equipment clean and organized.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory/Management Responsibilities

  • This is a non-management job that will report to a supervisor, manager, director or executive.

Minimum Requirements

  • Education - High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Experience - No previous experience required. Previous experience in a healthcare setting preferred.

Required Certifications, Registrations, Licenses

  • After hire, requires attendance of formal arrhythmia training class and successful completion of the Prisma Health Arrhythmia exam with a minimum passing score within 2 attempts.
  • Successful completion of the arrhythmia exam must be completed within 30 days of hire.
  • Arrhythmia competencies must be maintained on an annual basis if selected into a monitor tech role.
