Summary
The LTC Unit Assistant reports to the Clinical Director of LTC or designees and works under an RN supervisor. The role includes clerical duties for obtaining, preparing, and maintaining nursing unit records, communicating with patients, visitors, employees, and medical staff, assisting nursing care for residents across ages, and serving on the nursing team.
Responsibilities
- Direct patient care (40%).
- Perform general receptionist duties: answering phone, referring calls, intercom, taking messages, ordering supplies, etc. (30%).
- Direct visitors, family, employees, and the public to appropriate areas of the hospital (30%).
Other Duties and Responsibilities
- Support nursing mission, goals, policies, and standards; recognize, support, and implement hospital and unit policies.
- Provide age‑specific care per department standards and procedures.
- Perform emergency care and safety procedures; ensure safe and secure environment.
- Deliver excellent customer service and professionalism.
- Execute clerical duties, including electronic medical data entry, chart preparation, admission/discharge paperwork, and follow‑up appointments.
- Transport LTC patients to and from appointments as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
Credentials and Licenses
- BLS: Basic Life Support – required within 1 month of hire or transfer.
- CENA: Certified Educated Nurse Aide – successful completion of Michigan Nurse Aide Registry exam and current certificate required.
- Fingerprinting – required.
- Chauffeur's License – required (MI).
- DMV Record Check – required.
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent (essential).
Experience, Training and Skills
- Preferred two years of Long Term Care experience.
- Strong interpersonal skills for communication with individuals and groups.
- Competency in Microsoft Windows.
Physical/Mental Requirements and Typical Working Conditions
- Exposure to stressful situations, trauma, grief, and death.
- Ability to wear PPE, including latex or substitutes.
- Mobility without assistive device; perform job functions.
- Vision and hearing required.
- Frequent sitting, standing, walking, postural changes, lifting (medium physical demand).
- Exposure to bloodborne pathogens; follow testing requirements.
