Job summary

Burford Capital, the leading global finance and asset management firm focused on law, seeks an Underwriting Paralegal for its New York office. You will support the US commercial underwriting team with docket management, document preparation, and data accuracy in Salesforce and iManage.

Base compensation ranges from $75,000 to $85,000, with a discretionary annual bonus and welcome RSUs for full-time employees.

Qualifications

• Paralegal certification or college degree.
• Experience with State and Federal Court filings.
• 2-4 years in a fast-paced litigation firm with docket tracking.
• Experience with PACER, Bloomberg Law, Lexis.
• Microsoft Office suite expertise (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint; Excel a plus).
• Prior Salesforce and/or iManage desirable.
• Familiarity with redlines and Adobe editing.

Responsibilities

• Maintain accuracy and completeness of pipeline case/litigation records in Salesforce, including contacts and due dates.
• Join US commercial pipeline meetings and track investment opportunities.
• Audit data and correct missing data using control reports and forms.
• Upload diligences documents for investments into iManage.
• Perform legal and factual research for investment team members.
• Manage execution, distribution, and archiving of NDAs and closing documents via DocuSign.
• Enter financial/ownership data in Salesforce and prepare follow-on funding requests.

Summary

The Underwriting Paralegal for the New York office will be a valued member of Burford’s US commercial underwriting team, providing a vital service to Burford’s evaluation and management of litigation investments. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail and case file completeness and accuracy, as well as a track record for docket and document management in a complex legal environment are the keys to success in this role. The Underwriting Paralegal will be a collaborative team player with the credentials, experience and temperament to manage a busy case load with calm and ease, as well as to suggest and implement improvements to global processes and standards. It is an excellent opportunity for an ambitious paralegal seeking an “outside the box” position in which to take on new challenges and grow professionally.

The role will report to a Director on the US commercial underwriting team and be based in Burford’s New York office.

The base compensation range for this role is $75,000 - $85,000. Burford also pays a discretionary annual bonus and provides welcome RSUs (restricted stock units) to all full-time employees

Position Requirements

Underwriting Support

• Responsible for maintaining the accuracy and completeness of pipeline case / litigation records in Salesforce, including case contacts, upcoming due dates, and other background data on the litigation.
• Join US commercial team pipeline meetings and work with team members to track progress of investment opportunities through the pipeline.
• Audit data on a regular basis. Identify and correct missing data using control reports and Quip forms.
• Request, assemble, organize, and upload diligence documents for potential investments during underwriting review and for case filings and related documents for litigation in our investment portfolio into iManage, our document management system.
• Legal and factual research: Pull dockets, court filings, articles and other items for investment team members; assist on investment-specific research projects as necessary.
• Administer the execution, distribution, and electronic archiving of legal documents including NDAs and deal closing documents via DocuSign.
• Enter financial and ownership data into Salesforce at investment execution and prepare follow-on funding requests for investments that require ongoing funding, bill collection and review as necessary.

Other Responsibilities

• Participation in Underwriting Paralegal team projects to standardize and improve efficiencies of underwriting practices globally.
• Documentation of underwriting process and procedures.
• Maintenance of SharePoint.

Skills Desired

Qualifications & Experience

• Paralegal certification or college degree plus equivalent experience.
• Experience and knowledge of the State and Federal Court system and filings. Understanding of legal procedures, terminology and documentation.
• 2-4 years of experience in a fast-paced litigation firm in a role that includes docket tracking and case file management.
• Experience with PACER, Bloomberg Law, Lexis and similar legal applications.
• Expertise in Microsoft Office Outlook, Word, and PowerPoint; Excel skills is a plus.
• Prior experience with Salesforce and/or iManage desirable.
• Familiarity with running redlines, conforming pages and editing documents in Adobe a plus.
