Allied World in Los Angeles is seeking an Environmental Casualty Underwriter with 2+ years of commercial casualty underwriting experience. You will evaluate General Liability, Automobile Liability, Employers Liability, and Umbrella/Excess Liability, and develop pricing and terms for complex risks.

Strong broker relationships, analytical skills, and collaboration with actuarial, claims, legal, and risk management teams are essential.

Qualifications

Job Summary: Manage and grow a profitable portfolio of Environmental Casualty business through disciplined casualty underwriting and strategic relationships with retail and wholesale brokers. Utilize strong casualty underwriting fundamentals, business acumen, and analytical skills to evaluate complex risks, develop appropriate pricing and structures, and negotiate coverage terms and conditions. The ideal candidate will have experience underwriting primary casualty and/or excess casualty business, with a strong understanding of General Liability, Automobile Liability, Employers Liability, and Umbrella/Excess Liability. Direct environmental underwriting experience is beneficial but not required.

Job Duties and Responsibilities: Underwrite new and renewal Environmental Casualty business utilizing sound casualty underwriting principles and in accordance with Allied World underwriting guidelines, strategies, and underwriting authority. Evaluate General Liability, Automobile Liability, Employers Liability, Pollution Liability, Professional Liability, and Umbrella/Excess Liability exposures, as applicable, including assessment of operations, products/completed operations, fleet exposures, contractual risk transfer, loss history, jurisdictional considerations, and potential severity. Analyze and structure primary and excess casualty programs, including lead excess and unsupported excess placements. Evaluate underlying insurance programs, attachment points, limits, coverage terms, pricing adequacy, and the relationship between underlying and excess layers. Develop appropriate pricing, limits, attachment points, deductibles/retentions, coverage terms, exclusions, and other underwriting conditions based upon the individual risk characteristics and overall portfolio objectives. Review submissions, exposure information, loss experience, underlying policies and schedules, financial information, and other relevant underwriting materials to develop a comprehensive assessment of risk. Prepare quotes, binders, underwriting referrals, and other transaction documentation while maintaining complete and well-supported underwriting files in accordance with company standards. Exercise sound underwriting judgment and appropriately identify and elevate risks requiring referral based upon underwriting authority, guidelines, or unusual exposure characteristics. Strategically develop relationships with retail and wholesale brokers to generate new business opportunities, retain existing accounts, and expand Allied World’s Environmental Casualty presence within assigned territories. Develop and maintain effective working relationships with brokers, insureds, and internal business partners while delivering responsive and consistent service. Coordinate and participate in broker marketing calls, account stewardship meetings, industry events, and other business development activities to promote Allied World’s Environmental Casualty capabilities. Monitor casualty and environmental casualty market conditions, emerging exposures, loss trends, pricing developments, and competitive conditions that may impact underwriting strategy or portfolio performance. Partner effectively with internal stakeholders, including underwriting leadership, actuarial, claims, legal, risk management/loss control, operations, and other casualty underwriting teams. Continue professional development through relevant casualty and environmental underwriting training, industry education, professional designations, and participation in industry organizations.

Desired Skills and Experience: Two or more years of commercial primary casualty and/or excess casualty underwriting experience, including General Liability, Automobile Liability, Employers Liability, Umbrella, and Excess Liability. Experience underwriting lead and/or unsupported excess casualty business is highly desirable, including the ability to evaluate underlying programs, attachment adequacy, excess pricing, and coverage terms. Environmental casualty experience, including Contractors Pollution Liability, Site Pollution Liability, and/or Contractors Professional Liability, is beneficial but not required. Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively negotiate and communicate with brokers, insureds, and internal stakeholders. Strong business development and relationship management skills with demonstrated ability to generate new business opportunities, retain profitable renewal accounts, and develop long-term strategic broker relationships. Excellent organizational and desk management skills, with the ability to independently prioritize submissions, renewals, referrals, and business development activities. CPCU, ARM, or other relevant insurance industry designation preferred. Undergraduate degree required. Approximately 25% travel required. The salary range for this role is between: $85,000 - 125,000 The annualized base pay range is a broad range based on analysis of similar positions in the market. The actual base pay for the position may be above or below the listed range and determined by a number of considerations, including but not limited to complexity, location, and scope of the role, along with experience, skills, education, training, and other conditions of employment.
