We are currently seeking an individual with an appetite for meeting challenges and delivering results to fulfill a critical part in the creation of policies for our customers on our Direct Writer team. As one of our premier Underwriters in Direct Writer, you’ll review insurance applications and evaluate their potential risk to Sentry.

What You’ll Do

As a Commercial Lines Underwriter Specialist in Direct Writer, you will apply Underwriting policy, philosophy, and procedures to evaluate the acceptability of submitted or existing business.

You will also:

  • Work closely with sales personnel to obtain information needed to properly underwrite, price, and program individual policies/accounts.
  • Be responsible for underwriting of the more complex, larger accounts and reinsurance placements. Refer business outside of authority limit.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the insurance marketplace and emerging industry issues.
  • Evaluate established procedures for effectiveness and recommend change.
  • Develop Loss Projections for use in Loss Sensitive Rating Plans.
  • Train other underwriters, give presentations, and conduct training on underwriting procedures.
  • Attend sales meetings to meet and confer with Sales Representatives/Account Executives in pursuing new accounts.

What it Takes

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work experience.
  • 5+ years of related work experience.
  • Previous insurance underwriting experience.
  • Completion or in the process of taking insurance courses such as IIA and CPCU preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of specific product line insurance concepts and terminology.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of reinsurance procedures.
  • Effective analytical, human relations, and communication skills.
  • Ability to meet limited travel expectations.
