Job summary

Lumos Fiber is seeking a full-time Underground Utility Protection Coordinator in North Carolina to manage 811 locate tickets, coordinate with field teams and vendors, and ensure timely responses to protect underground infrastructure.

The role requires strong communication, data tracking, and compliance with One-Call regulations. You will monitor SLA performance, generate KPI reports, and escalate issues to leadership as needed.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma required; Education in construction management, GIS, or equivalent preferred.
  • 2+ years of experience in utility coordination, telecommunications, construction, or underground infrastructure operations.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Understanding of GIS mapping systems and utility locate software preferred.
  • Experience auditing GIS/fiber databases to identify data quality concerns.
  • Knowledge of 811/One-Call processes and underground utility locating practices.
  • Familiarity with state utility damage prevention regulations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication; able to collaborate with multiple vendors.

Responsibilities

  • Receive, review, and process incoming 811 locate tickets within required response times.
  • Coordinate locating activities with internal field teams and third-party vendors.
  • Prioritize emergency and high impact locate requests to minimize service disruptions.
  • Maintain accurate records of locate requests, responses, markings, and completed work.
  • Monitor ticket volumes, aging, and compliance metrics to ensure SLA adherence.
  • Communicate with construction crews, contractors, municipalities, and customers regarding locate statuses.
  • Investigate damage incidents and assist with root-cause analysis and reporting.
  • Ensure compliance with state One-Call laws and Lumos damage prevention policies.
  • Generate reports related to locate performance, damages, ticket trends, and KPI's.
  • Escalate unresolved conflicts, missed locates, or risk-related issues to leadership promptly.

What You'll Do

What Makes You a Great Fit
  • High School diploma required. Education in construction management, GIS, utility management, or equivalent experience preferred.
  • 2+ years of experience in utility coordination, telecommunications, construction, or underground infrastructure operations preferred.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills required.
  • Understanding of key business operations within Fiber Construction Technologies is highly desirable.
  • Working experience managing multiple vendors and stakeholders.
  • Experience auditing business processes and GIS/fiber databases to identify data quality concerns, process gaps, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Knowledge of GIS mapping systems and utility locate software preferred.
  • Familiarity with state utility damage prevention regulations.
  • Knowledge of 811/One-Call processes and underground utility locating practices.
  • Experience working with contract locating vendors.
Physical Requirements
  • Frequent sedentary periods using computers, keyboard, and other peripherals.
