Job summary

Aspire Communications LLC in Orlando is seeking an Underground Utility Locator to identify and mark buried utility lines ahead of excavation. You will use EM locating tools and GPR, interpret maps, and document coordinates to help prevent hits during construction.

This role requires attention to detail, the ability to work outdoors in all weather, and effective communication with crews and property owners on-site.

Certifications are a plus; training is available for the right candidate.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Valid driver's license with clean driving record.
• Experience in utility locating, construction, surveying, or damage prevention preferred.
• Ability to read basic maps/blueprints and use handheld GPS/tablet devices.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently.
• Physical ability to walk long distances and work outdoors in all weather.
• NULCA or state locator certification a plus (or willingness to obtain).

Responsibilities

• Respond to and complete utility locate tickets (811/One-Call) within required timeframes.
• Use EM locating equipment and/or GPR to detect and trace underground utility lines.
• Accurately mark utility locations using APWA color code.
• Interpret utility maps, as-built drawings, and GIS data to verify findings.
• Document locates with photos, GPS coordinates, and detailed notes.
• Communicate with excavators, contractors, and property owners on-site.
• Identify and report discrepancies between utility records and field conditions; maintain locating equipment.
• Follow safety protocols, including traffic control and PPE requirements.
• Work outdoors in varying weather conditions, often independently.

Aspire Communications is a startup, turn-key technology integration company based in Orlando, Florida. Formed in September of 2019, Aspire has quickly grown into a 150+ person operation in less than five years and continues to rapidly expand.

About the Role

We're looking for a detail-oriented Underground Utility Locator to identify and mark the location of buried utility lines — including gas, electric, water, sewer, and telecommunications — ahead of excavation, construction, and maintenance projects. This role plays a critical part in public safety and damage prevention, ensuring crews and the public are protected from utility strikes.

Key Responsibilities

• Respond to and complete utility locate tickets (e.g., 811/One-Call requests) within required timeframes
• Use electromagnetic (EM) locating equipment and/or ground-penetrating radar (GPR) to detect and trace underground utility lines
• Accurately mark utility locations using industry-standard paint colors and flags (per APWA color code)
• Interpret utility maps, as-built drawings, and GIS data to verify findings
• Document completed locates with photos, GPS coordinates, and detailed notes
• Communicate with excavators, contractors, and property owners on-site
• Identify and report discrepancies between utility records and field conditionsMaintain and calibrate locating equipment
• Follow all safety protocols, including traffic control and PPE requirements
• Work outdoors in varying weather conditions, often independently

• NULCA or state-specific locator certification a plus (or willingness to obtain)

Preferred Skills

• Familiarity with EM locating equipment (Ridgid, Vivax-Metrotech, Radiodetection, etc.)
• Experience with GPR equipment
• Basic understanding of utility infrastructure (gas, electric, telecom, water/sewer)

Salary: $18.00-$24.00/hr
