Position Summary
The Underground / Deep Utility Superintendent is responsible for leading field operations for complex underground utility and deep excavation projects. This role directs crews, coordinates equipment and subcontractors, maintains production schedules, and ensures work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with plans, specifications, and quality standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Plan, coordinate, and supervise daily field operations for underground utility construction, including water, sanitary sewer, storm drainage, force mains, and related infrastructure.
- Lead deep excavation and utility installation activities, including trenching, shoring, dewatering, bedding, pipe installation, structures, backfill, and restoration.
- Direct foremen, operators, laborers, and subcontractors to achieve daily and weekly production goals.
- Review project plans, specifications, utility profiles, grades, and schedules to ensure accurate execution of work.
- Coordinate manpower, equipment, materials, deliveries, and subcontractor activities with project management.
- Ensure proper trench safety, excavation protection, confined-space procedures, and compliance with OSHA and company safety requirements.
- Conduct pre-task planning, daily safety discussions, and jobsite inspections; immediately address unsafe conditions or practices.
- Monitor line and grade, elevations, slopes, utility crossings, and installation tolerances.
- Work closely with survey and GPS personnel to confirm layout and elevations.
- Track daily production, quantities, manpower, equipment utilization, delays, and field conditions.
- Identify potential conflicts, constructability concerns, or schedule impacts and communicate them promptly to project management.
- Coordinate inspections, testing, tie-ins, shutdowns, and other critical utility activities.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and professional jobsite.
- Train, coach, and hold field employees accountable for safety, quality, productivity, attendance, and performance.
- Perform other duties as assigned in support of project and company operations.
Requirements
- Minimum 5 years of underground utility construction experience, with prior supervisory or superintendent experience strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated experience with deep utility installation and excavation operations.
- Strong knowledge of water, sewer, storm drainage, trenching, shoring, dewatering, and pipe installation methods.
- Ability to read and interpret civil plans, utility profiles, specifications, grades, and survey information.
- Working knowledge of OSHA excavation and trench safety requirements.
- Strong leadership, communication, planning, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple crews and coordinate changing field priorities.
- Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
- OSHA 10/30, Competent Person, First Aid/CPR, confined-space, or similar construction certifications are preferred.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and jobsite conditions.
- Ability to walk and stand for extended periods on uneven terrain.
- Ability to climb, bend, stoop, kneel, and access active construction areas.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds as needed.
- Ability to work around heavy equipment, open excavations, noise, dust, traffic, and other construction hazards.
- Must be able to work extended hours, early mornings, nights, or weekends when project conditions require.
