The University of Chicago seeks an Instructional Assistant to support undergraduate philosophy instruction. Reporting to the Director of Undergraduate Studies, you will assist faculty, mentor students, and help prepare course materials and technology for PHIL courses.

This 9.5-month position runs September 1 through June 15 with pay spread over 12 months and involves supporting high-enrollment courses, with duties including discussion sections, office hours, and feedback on student work.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in philosophy or related field.
  • PhD in philosophy or related field.
  • Minimum of two years experience as a teaching assistant or instructor in philosophy.
  • Proficiency in Mac and PC environments; Word, Excel, Outlook, and online organizational tools.
  • Strong editing and proofreading skills in English.
  • Ability to work autonomously and meet deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Assist instructors of record in delivering PHIL 20100 and other high-enrollment courses.
  • Attend all class sessions and read assigned materials.
  • Lead weekly review and discussion sections and hold regular office hours.
  • Read and comment on papers and exams; assist in grading.
  • Coordinate discussion sections and manage course logistics and tech.
  • Manage the course’s academic technologies and support instructors and students.
