Job description

Major Responsibilities

Perform all ultrasound examinations according to department protocols and ACR standards, using proper imaging techniques and equipment to obtain scans of optimal quality.

• Position patient, adjust equipment and immobilize patients to ensure optimal quality exams are obtained.
• Assist physician during invasive procedures, adhering to sterile techniques, conducting timeout and completing all paperwork accurately.
• Operate portable ultrasound equipment when required to perform portable procedures as requested throughout the hospital.

Documentation and Charting

Responsibility for documenting pertinent history for each procedure, providing the radiologist with adequate information prior to interpretation.

• Obtain appropriate medical histories and complete comment sheets for each patient.
• Communicate and/or fax “STAT” reports to physician offices, nursing units, and Emergency Department upon request, complying with critical value criteria.
• Correlate current exam data with that from the patient’s prior exams.
• Maintain routine operation of the department PACS system.
• Communicate with radiologists to assure exam completeness.

Safety and Infection Control

• Maintain CPR certification to further ensure safety of patients in the department.
• Comply with OSHA Standards for infection control to prevent cross-contamination to patients and instruments.
• Maintain awareness of safety hazard labels, pathology specimens, completed lab requisitions for delivery to appropriate labs.
• Clean, prepare, and sanitize transducers for scanning according to manufacturer recommendations and established infection control standards.
• Attend mandatory in‑services and meetings.
• Assure accuracy of exams performed and patient identification according to hospital policy.
• Comply with accrediting organizations (ACR, IDPH, EPA) standards.

Technical Support

• Interact closely with the Ultrasound supervisor to provide smooth daily operation of the department.
• Assist with telephone answering, requisition creation, and other administrative tasks as needed.
• Demonstrate reliability for attendance and punctuality.
• Demonstrate adaptability and flexibility for change; may be asked to work at any Condell location.
• Work as a team member.
• Transport patients as requested.
• Explain any delay in testing to patients.

Continuing Education

• Maintain continuing education required for ARDMS certification.
• Share knowledge obtained from seminars and articles with other staff.
• Compile data required for continuous quality improvement.

Orientation and Education

• Provide direction and instruction to U/S technologist or student in need of assistance with specific procedures.

Problem Solving and Interdepartmental Relations

• Maintain positive guest relations and telephone etiquette following prescribed departmental policies and procedures.
• Thoroughly communicate technical procedural information to patients in a positive and friendly manner without revealing diagnosis.

Education and Experience Requirements

Graduate of an AMA‑approved School of Ultrasound.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Possess a high degree of technical knowledge to perform U/S studies.
• Be able to make diagnostic judgments when scanning and present them to the radiologist.

Certification Requirements

• Registry eligible.
• CPR certification within 30 days of hire.
• New hire must be ARDMS certified within 1 year of graduation.
• Current Advocate associates must be ARDMS certified within 6 months.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

• Must be able to take call on a rotation basis.
• Adapt to flexible hours at minimal notice as required.
• Work holidays and weekends.
• Operate portable equipment.
• May be exposed to hazardous materials and life‑threatening diseases.
• Perform emergency procedures as required.
• Require good judgment, reliability, responsibility, independent thought and action.
• Work in a fast‑paced environment with established time constraints.
• Be conscientious in practicing high‑quality patient care.
• Have good oral and written communication skills.
• Lift and move patients: heavy lifting 50–100 pounds occasionally, 25–50 pounds frequently, 10–20 pounds constantly.
• Recognize needs and behaviors of pediatric, adolescent, adult, and older adult patients, modifying approach and communication accordingly.
• Lift up to 35 pounds without assistance; for patient lifts over 35 pounds, use patient handling equipment with at least one other associate when available.
