Job Summary

The role performs a full range of diagnostic ultrasound imaging and therapeutic services, supporting the Radiology Department’s mission to provide diagnostic information for patient treatment.

Core Duties and Responsibilities
  • Plan and perform imaging procedures to produce sonographic medical images for diagnosis or treatment of patients, meeting department standards.
  • Demonstrate appropriate knowledge and technical competence, maintaining professional standards required by the organization and applicable accreditation bodies.
  • Review physician requests in detail and clarify any questions before performing studies.
  • Produce images of optimal quality.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all Protected Health Information.
  • Assess patient needs for comfort, hygiene, and range of motion, providing necessary support.
  • Educate patients about sonographic procedures, answering questions as needed.
  • Promote a team approach to Radiology services by interacting positively with technical, support, nursing, resident, and medical staff.
  • Engage in problem‑solving, crisis management, and system implementation to support efficient, high‑quality, cost‑effective patient care.
  • Serve as a clinical instructor, meeting sonography education program standards and evaluating student performance fairly and consistently.
  • Maintain professional development in sonographic imaging techniques.
  • Participate in in‑house training and development, applying new skills to performance under supervision.
  • Display imaging techniques, patient care, and guest‑relationship behaviors in accordance with ARDMS Code of Ethics and applicable policies and regulations.
  • Report equipment failures immediately.
  • Perform high‑level disinfection of ultrasound equipment per department policy.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Graduate of a Medical Imaging program.
  • Obtain Basic Life Support certification within 30 days of hire date.
  • Obtain ARDMS certification within 90 days of hire.
  • Must be able to follow written and verbal directions in English.
  • Must be able to prioritize tasks and multi‑task.
  • Must work with a teamwork approach.
Physical Requirements
  • Differentiate shades of gray on black‑and‑white displays.
  • Stand and walk for six to seven hours a day.
  • Lift, push, and pull up to 50 pounds.
  • Push ultrasound machine for portable exams.
Working Environment
  • Clinical setting.
Skills and Abilities
  • Follow directions both written and verbal in English.
  • Work with people utilizing a teamwork approach.
  • Prioritize work tasks and multi‑task.
Sonographer Clinical Ladder

Level 1: No experience required. All sonographers with less than 12 months of experience enter at Level 1.

Level 2: Meets Level 1 requirements, one year of sonographer experience, and completes Competency of Skill Set Tech 1 plus additional skill sets.

Level 3: Meets Level 2 requirements, one continuing education pathway, three years of sonographer experience, compliance with three leadership/supervisory skills, and completes Competency of Skill Set Tech 1, 2, and 3 plus three additional skill sets.

Level 4: Meets Level 3 requirements, one continuing education pathway, five years of sonographer experience, compliance with five leadership/supervisory skills, and completes Competency of Skill Set Tech 1, 2, and 3 plus four additional skill sets.
